Boogaloo?

it was son-like music in english with hints of soul. It could also be parts in english and parts in spanish. Joe Cuba is a good reference point when speaking about boogaloo. It was created with mainstream america in mind with hopes to take the latin wave into american households. It failed.

Hmmm, interesting article so far. (Must go back and read again, after I strangle *oops* address an unruly computer user).

One question though. It has always bothered me that sometimes music has to be either watered down or spiced up (packaging, etc.) to be considered palatable to the US mainstream. Why not let the music speak for itself. :? Oh, I'm sorry. I forget that you don't make a whole lot of money that way. :roll: I think I need a cup of coffee. Alter ego Alice is showing again. :(
 
Having grown up during the 1960's I recall boogaloo being frequently mentioned. I had always thought it was one of those dances done to pop music of the day; particularly to what was termed "soul" music during that era. I was not aware of any latin orgins, but then I was not into dancing back in those days.
 
I know for sure it was a specific dance. I'm just not sure if I know anyone who can do it. There are multiple references to it on my Sam Cooke CD's, which makes it just the wrong era. My parents were too old and my siblings too young. I'll ask though. I'll email my brother-in-law and ask him. He was big on African American popular dance from the fifties through eighties, so, if anybody in my family knows, he should.
 
I know a Colombian who can do the boogaloo... it looks kinda weird... I tried too and I am losing it after 10 phrases or so :oops: :oops:
 
I think a lot of purists don't give bugalu the credit it deserves. A lot of these musicians were very talented and could pull of some crazy riffs that I only wish I could do. I like a lot of them old tunes. Pretty much everyone I know, knows how to dance it. It was passed down from generation to generation i guess.
 
I haven't heard all that much boogaloo except for some Sonora Carruseles stuff (think they're covers, though the liner notes aren't specific about this), Joe Cuba (thanks, boriken!) and the Lebron Brothers, who were apparently one of (many?) bands producing this music in the late Sixties. Can anyone tell me anything about the Lebron Brothers Orchestra? I found a double CD (contents:'Psychedlic Goes Latin' and 'The Brooklyn Bums') in the rummage racks at a music store, but I haven't seen anything else by them anywhere. There's no discography included with the info on the CD cover, so I'd appreciate any info anyone might be able to share.

I do seem to recall my mom (she was 18 in 1970) making reference to a dance called the boogaloo, but that would have been (as Spitfire mentioned) in the context of dancing to "soul" music; but I think the lines may have been a bit blurry concerning the genre to which music like boogaloo actually belonged. Maybe the same dance?
 
Actually boogaloo is a term that covers a spectrum of dance, with varying combinations of Latin and African-American muiscal traditions. So, yes you could consider boogaloo soul music at one extreme, but it can also be latin at the other extreme. The article link I provide at the beginning of this thread has tons of information. :)
