Burning Man

Not me, going down to watch and/or dance in Embassy Ball instead. Truth is, I'm not a huge fan of the dust and the heat, and haven't been for several years and probably won't ever go back. (I've been three times in the past, though.)

However, who knows, maybe one year if I'm feeling totally inspired with a cool art project, I'll go.

You've been 3 times! Wow! That doesn't sound like someone who doesn't like dust and heat :p

Believe me, I didn't have fun the 2nd time, and the 3rd time I was only there for exactly 24 hours so it wasn't so bad -- plus that was the year it snowed in the High Sierras right at the beginning of September, so it was cool on the Playa. We actually stopped and filled a cooler with snow when we were passing through Donner Summit. On the morning after the burn, a we built a 18-inch high snowman and sat around watching him melt until a friend came by and asked if he could "go all Godzilla" on the snowman. So we said sure, why not, and he made Godzilla noises and stomped around and smashed the thing to mud.

Let's put it this way, one year, given the choice between going to Burning Man and going to Cambodia and Sri Lanka, I went to Cambodia and Sri Lanka. And last year, given a choice between going to Burning Man and going to Embassy (where I danced, and had friends competing to watch, and watched the IDSF World Cup Standard), I went to Embassy.

Maybe I'll go back to Burning Man some year, I haven't ruled it out completely, but it's really just not my thing any more.

Oh, and Samina, at my age I've had a couple of other past lives that one might find suprising. You know I was a rave DJ back in the early/mid 90's, right? Used to help throw illegal parties in secret locations, etc etc. It was fun and that's something I kind of miss because I adore the music, but in 1997 it became a choice between the rave scene and ballroom dancing, and I took the ballroom dancing route. That said, I'm on the committee that is selecting DJs and live acts for a little "underground" music festival coming up in September, so it's not like I'm 100% out of touch with the old crowd, as it were. More like about 85% out of touch.

I have been considering getting back into it, except that I'm really getting kind of old -- like who in their mid-40s in their right mind wants to stay up all night playing music for a bunch of teenagers, and what teenager in their right mind would want me around? But I have so many good records, and there is so much good electronic music out there....sigh. It's all about choices, I suppose.

Reminded me of a bank/investment-advisor radio commercial that played around here a year or two ago. She wanted to own and run her own nightclub, so she scrimped and saved and was finally able to do it. Only it took her so long that now she's too old to enjoy it. We hear her sounding "last call" and a customer says, "But it's only 9 o'clock!" "It's late! Time to go to bed! What's wrong with you kids?"

Seems I spend half my time trying to figure when to sneak enough nap time so that I can make it through the week and then through weekend dancing.

my oldest is major into that sort of music. he now DJs regularly at Puma, devises his own mixes, has a collaborative partner for producing electronic club music... wants to be bigtime in the clubs eventually. one day, when he's got more going on with it, we'll have to make a point of having a big party, which of course you simply must attend. :D:cool:

OH my god, of course I'll attend!

Ask him if he's into old school trancey acid from the mid-90's. I have an excellent collection that will never get played again unless I can find a younger DJ who is into it and wants to buy up some of my classic records. You can drop names to see if he bites...

Labels: Rising High, Superstition, EX, Underground Resistance, DJAX UP-Beats, Industrial Strength Trance, Plus 8, Platipus, Harthouse, R&S, ESP

Artists: Vapourspace, Hardfloor, Richie Hawtin, Union Jack, Jam and Spoon, Nico

and many MANY more, I just picked the most well-known stuff for name recognition factor.

The only catch: 98% of it is on 12" vinyl. Some things are probably rarities by now, especially any decent white labels I've got.
