Can I ask you a question?

Why do people often ask this question? :(

Depending on where you live, it is a 'free' country. So, ask the question(s) - just be prepared to get an answer from one (or several ) of the following categories:

- no answer
- an answer which has absolutely NO bearing on the question asked
- a 'half' answer, if you are lucky, a 'quarter' answer if unlucky
- a question ie. Why? [Unspoken - mind your own business!]
- a look/glare or even laughter!

Because ----

it,s selling like hot cakes !!

The answer to the " q" thing, that I really like " You look smart enough, give it a try " . Hope you all take this with good humor in mind .:D

IME...they are generally meaning "may I ask you a personal question that I really have no idea whether or not I am entitled to ask"

Yup. When I want to go that route, though, I usually flat-out ask, "Would you mind if I asked you a personal question?"

In which case then, ask the question already! Because, if you, the recepient of the question do not know what the question is, how do you know whether you are going to answer it or not!

As Joe says, by the time you have already said it, a) you have already asked a question and b) you may have already asked the question you really want to ask in that time! (Just 'effiency' ;))

Thanks tangotime for the 'may' ;)
