Can we talk dresses?

It’s me again with another dress question. Lol.

So I’ve indicated that I’ll probably do a tango for the studio’s holiday showcase. I’ve only attended one. But it was movie themed so some people wore more like themed costume outfits.

My teacher has asked if I’m going to wear my comp dress that I recently bought. (Maybe if it fits well at the end of December.) Would I look insane the only person in a standard comp dress? but what are other options for showcase dresses? Obviously don’t want to go insane money wise. Nice practice dress?

I’ve worn competition dresses for showcases, as have other ladies I know. I didn’t want to spend money on a costume I would never wear again, and I had the dress, and pro thought it would be nice for me to wear it. Other options that I have done too is to wear nice practice wear with some bling added, like a jeweled belt. Or look at Amazon if you need something “themed.” I got a great Gypsy skirt and scarf for cheap that worked.

Ask your pro and fellow students what other students usually wear for showcases with your studio, because it can vary.

If wearing a comp dress is pretty common, and you want to wear yours, that's great. If it's really unusual for students to wear a comp dress at your studio showcases, then consider your other options. You can wear an uncommon choice (e.g. comp dress when no one else is doing so), but it may not feel comfortable when you're at the event if you're dressed really differently than the other students.

guys...the AliExpress dress is arriving tomorrow and I'm actually so nervous
my friend ordered a custom latin dress from the same retailer and it looks beautiful and well made
but maybe bc it's the first comp dress i've ever ordered im so goddamn nervous lol
fingers crossed it's a good dress and i'll post pictures when i get it!!

Would I be insane to try and make part of my costume for the showcase Dec 22? My skills are limited but I guess worst case scenario is a don’t like it and have to come up with something else?

I'd say that it depends what part and how limited your skills are. I've been gradually developing my own sewing skills over the years, to the point that I made significant alterations to my latest used dress (constructed new mesh back (lined with nude lycra) and sleeves from fabric rather than buying and inserting a leotard, as I had done previously), and I made a latin skirt from scratch that a student on the college team that I advise just wore at a comp. But the process has always been very trial-and-error, and it only really makes sense because I enjoy it, and because I haven't tried to do anything on a tight timeline.

So -- if you have something in mind that you can't easily buy but that you have a sense for how you'd make, and it's realistic to believe that you'd be able to make it, sure, give it a shot. But give yourself a realistic deadline for when to decide it's not working, when you'll still be able to get hold of something else to wear instead.

It’s a pretty simple sort of vintage inspired dressing gown type thing that would go over a dress that I’d buy so it’s not super fitted and not too complicated I think.

I’ve done a lot of sewing for when I taught myself upholstery and I’ve made lined drapes and piped cushions that sort of thing. I’m going to look for the most simple pattern and go from there. And head to the garment district in LA because why not.

I don’t really want to try and make a leotard so I wonder if I can buy one and sew it into a stretchy dress? Is that a thing or is is more complicated?

If you haven't worked with stretch material before, look for some tutorials and tips on that. Your sewing skills will transfer over, but it's definitely an adjustment. Two tips off the top of my head - make sure you use ball point needles, and pay attention to which direction the fabric stretches the most.

If you start with a pattern you should be OK. Just wear the body suit underneath the costume, it would be tricky to attach it.

Just get 4 way stretch so you don't have to worry about the stretch direction

good newsssss!!!!!
my dress arrived yesterday, a full day earlier than the retailer said they'd send it by. I was so scared at first because the box was...tiny, for lack of a better word, but i was so pleasantly surprised when I opened the box!!
The color is a much more vibrant blue than I thought it would be, and the stoning on the bodice makes it quite heavy to hold, but wearing it/moving in it wasn't difficult at all
The skirt is also not heavy and not too puffy! It has a good amount of volume and it flows quite nicely when I turn.
The retailer also included a necklace with the dress, which I probably won't be wearing? It's just...not cute lol and because the bodice is so eye-catching, I think earrings might be the better move.

Anyways!! I'm really really satisfied with my order, and if I ever buy another comp dress, I'll definitely be using the same retailer again. I have a few pictures of the dress, but I'll update this thread with proper photos from my comp this weekend!!

Good luck at the competition. Eager to see photos of you wearing the dress.
