Posted this as a general question, and it was recommended that I post to the Capital Dancesport thread, so I am hoping anyone with a bit of experience can help!
I am attending my first live comp as a spectator (trained in predominently American style at an indy studio back when I was in college) and I have some questions to help me and my dancing DD (who is very interested in pursuing comp dancing in the near future and when she goes to college) better understand how it all works. We will be attending Capital dancesport Fri and Sat (sadly we will miss most of the American style events, which is what I am most familiar with... I imagine she would be learning more of the Int'l style in college anyway?) so through the years of lurking I think I understand some of the divisions... I also realize that it may depend on the comp how the age/divisions are set up.
~I am of the impression that Rising stars follows syllabus and precedes professional?
~Closed syllabus means no patterns outside of a set syllabus? (BTW, do you have to follow just ONE syllabus, or stay within patterns taught under ANY syllabus level?)
~Open syllabus allows patterns from outside of that syllabus level (does that mean you can use patterns from above your stated level and does that include "variations'?)
~what then is scholarship?
~ I believe that some comps assign points so that you cannot accrue too many points at say, bronze level, before needing to make room for the newbies and moving on a level, but is it the same for moving from syllabus to open, or syllabus to rising stars (or worse yet, is that the same thing - you can see I am a little confused yet about the distinction).
Any interesting/helpful info you can share about this comp in particular or spectating any comp would be very helpful! I know about the dress code (though is a full length gown necessary on evenings for spectators at THIS particular comp - I know it would be at some of the larger comps), but would love to know any insider tips for viewing and avoid making any faux pas!!
Thanks to all of you who post! This forum has been so helpful (and interesting) to someone who "left" dance to raise/homeschool kids, but is easing their way back into their passion. I have lurked here for so long, I feel like I already know some of you (gosh, may even recognize some from their pictures if they attend this weekend), so it is about time, I guess, that I share too.
Thanks in advance for any help or input!!
