DP and I are very excited to be dancing at Capital this year, on Friday and probably Saturday nights. It will be our first time dancing in the D.C. area and have heard great things about the competition.

Who else is going?

I'm a maybe as well... I would like to do it, but that would mean that I spent all August weekends travelling. would be nice to stay local for one.

Capital Dancesport Champs

Capital is at the Hyatt Alexandria in Virgina (I checked again just to see if the moved it...no same place this year), which is in the DC area...it's closer to DC than to Baltimore, DC downtown is about 15 minutes non-rush hour...so I would consider that DC (region at the least)

checking Google earth about 4-5 miles by air (straight) to Pentagon and 5-6 miles to DC proper across the Potomac

It's a good comp, mostly regional, but does attract usually a few top pros from all over U.S. in certain categories for Pro/Pro, but no where the turnout for a comp like Emerald or Manhattan (also ironically Manhattan is not in Manhattan, but in Brooklyn)

Mambo, I was giving HCMikeC a hard time because he said he's never danced in the DC area, but he forgot that he has actually danced in Baltimore (which is fairly close)...not because I thought Capital was in Baltimore.

According to the comp website and before anyone makes reservations at the wrong hotel, the comp hotel is

Hilton Alexandria Mark Center
5000 Seminary Road
Alexandria VA 22311

I heard that Giampiero and Anna is dancing in the Capital this year. I am very excited to watch them in Saturday evening.

The Capital 2009 was my very first dance competition. I look forward dance at the Capital this year –it will be my one year anniversary ;)

*bump*

Just noticed that a final schedule is up on the Capital website if anyone is interested in taking a look.

Started the packing process last night. I keep reminding myself that I am only there for two full days...but I know I will end up overpacking!

Good luck to everyone competing.

Posted this as a general question, and it was recommended that I post to the Capital Dancesport thread, so I am hoping anyone with a bit of experience can help!

I am attending my first live comp as a spectator (trained in predominently American style at an indy studio back when I was in college) and I have some questions to help me and my dancing DD (who is very interested in pursuing comp dancing in the near future and when she goes to college) better understand how it all works. We will be attending Capital dancesport Fri and Sat (sadly we will miss most of the American style events, which is what I am most familiar with... I imagine she would be learning more of the Int'l style in college anyway?) so through the years of lurking I think I understand some of the divisions... I also realize that it may depend on the comp how the age/divisions are set up.

~I am of the impression that Rising stars follows syllabus and precedes professional?
~Closed syllabus means no patterns outside of a set syllabus? (BTW, do you have to follow just ONE syllabus, or stay within patterns taught under ANY syllabus level?)
~Open syllabus allows patterns from outside of that syllabus level (does that mean you can use patterns from above your stated level and does that include "variations'?)
~what then is scholarship?
~ I believe that some comps assign points so that you cannot accrue too many points at say, bronze level, before needing to make room for the newbies and moving on a level, but is it the same for moving from syllabus to open, or syllabus to rising stars (or worse yet, is that the same thing - you can see I am a little confused yet about the distinction).

Any interesting/helpful info you can share about this comp in particular or spectating any comp would be very helpful! I know about the dress code (though is a full length gown necessary on evenings for spectators at THIS particular comp - I know it would be at some of the larger comps), but would love to know any insider tips for viewing and avoid making any faux pas!!

Thanks to all of you who post! This forum has been so helpful (and interesting) to someone who "left" dance to raise/homeschool kids, but is easing their way back into their passion. I have lurked here for so long, I feel like I already know some of you (gosh, may even recognize some from their pictures if they attend this weekend), so it is about time, I guess, that I share too.

Thanks in advance for any help or input!!
