Cashing in Scholarships

Pro-am students STILL can't technically receive money. The no-teaching no-pay still applies to them. So calling it 'scholarship' keeps it in the gray area.
According to the NDCA Rulebook, II.A.3.e: "A Pro/Am Student Dancer is permitted to enter Ballroom dance "Pro/Am Scholarship Events" which offer monetary prizes. In this case, any prize money awarded belongs to the Pro./Am Student Dancer, not to the professional, and the Pro/Am Student Dancer may decide how it is to be used."

I think that means Pro-am students can technically receive money -- in this instance.

Correct - and this is the ONLY instance in which they can receive money. Which, as stated earlier, is definitely nice but doesn't scratch the surface of what is spent.

Pro/am student dancers are "student dancers", NOT "amateurs" and fall under a completely different rule set (for NDCA, anyway) when looking at accepting money, goods, or services for their dancing whether it is prize money or teaching. End hijack.

Back on track - thank you to everyone for this conversation about vouchers vs. checks - this has actually been very helpful. I'm entering a new competition realm this year and coming across all kinds of new things. I've encountered the immediate check in the past, but honesty now I feel much better prepared for if/when I come across a voucher. Thanks to the OP for asking the question, and to everyone for the responses!

one other thing...and this may seem obvious, but I am going to say it anyhow; even if you know that you're getting a check, verify the amount and your name...because sometimes organizers get confused...I have ended up with the wrong check more than once

Yeah, and remember, the IRS wants to know. Not that I've ever won enough for them to do anything about it, but they want to know.

how often do pro/ammers split the winnings with their pro??

I know the rule book specifically states that the winnings belong to the student. I have never "split" my winnings but I dont want to come across as violating etiquette. I figured the money is going right back to payment for lessons, etc. anyway. But I suppose if one splits the winnings with pro, it's almost like a gratuity rather than payment for a service....

perhaps this is not the thread to post the question?

I have never split the winnings with my pro in the past, and am most definitely of the opinion that the winnings, as stated in the rule book, belong to the student. My pro has never asked me to split the winnings with him (okay, he's teased about it, but he also knows it all goes back to him pretty much immediately.) However, he's good to me, and I'm all for giving him a "bonus" the next time I have the opportunity, especially when it's money I wasn't expecting to get in the first place.

I know other students of his who routinely split their winnings every time. However, that's their decision - not because my pro expects or demands it.

I consider the winnings as belonging to the student... who invariably will use it to purchase more lessons from the pro anyway. I do know of one pro who has made arrangements with his students beforehand that he will receive the scholarship winnings.

My pro believes the "winnings" are for the student. Always. Although I've also danced with other teachers and have received scholarship winnings,,none of them ever asked or posed the thought to split or turn it over to them. They believed the hard work reward of the student should be for the student only.

I've seen cases where instructors offered something in exchange for scholarship winnings. For example, BOGO lessons the month before the comp with the understanding that any scholarship winnings would go to the teacher. That sort of thing is cool, especially since the impression I get is that cases like that usually happen when an instructor is looking for an excuse to help a cash-strapped student get more lessons. But I'd personally have real issues with an instructor that simply expected some or all of my scholarship winnings as a matter of course.

Agreed. If I am going to share my winnings it is out of the goodness of my heart, or some pre-arranged deal. And usually that is because he's already cutting me such a good deal, I feel like I owe him a return favor. Certainly not because he asks for one.

IMO... scholarship money goes to the student, the top teacher money belongs to the teacher... which can be much more depending on placement. There are often instructions inside the envelope (if there isn't a check) on how to get the actual money. I just follow those instructions.
