CCM's Two Pieces of Good News

1) I just got the official letter on Thursday. The Faculty Affairs Committee at my college has recommended me for PROMOTION to the rank of Professor! (The ranks are assistant professor, associate professor, and professor.)

Candidates get rated in three areas:
-Teaching
-Service
-Research
They gave me a ranking of 1 (on a scale of 1-3, with 1 being the highest) in all three areas!

I was particularly proud of this sentence in my letter: "You are obviously committed to teaching all students and your student evaluations leave no doubt that you have the winning combination of expertise, passion, humor, and clear communication to meet their needs."

When I was 33, I sat down and wrote down some life goals for the next 10 years. Having a baby and getting promoted to full professor were two of them. So I am very pleased.

2) Today starts my SABBATICAL. I have been granted the spring semester off to recharge, renew, and work on my research (which often gets put on the backburner during the semester due to the demands of teaching, advising, and committee work.)

I still have some loose ends to tie up at work, but aside from those, I am completely on my own schedule for the next 247 days (give or take).

It feels weird, especially since I am coming off a very intense week of grading and other time-consuming tasks. (I had so much to do that I hid in lowest level of the library a couple of days so that I wouldn't be disturbed or distracted.) Liberating, but weird!

Should be easier to find time to practice over the next few months! ;)

Thanks for letting me share.

Awesome.
Hey, maybe soon you will be in a position to offer me a position - if you are hiring any ancient academic relics that is

Congratulations CCM!!!

Although I'm sure it is but a fraction of your own feelings, I am so tremendously pleased for you (and I'd be proud of that sentence too)!

WOW CCM congrats and if you are coming Saturday night I will have some wine or champaign to have a toast! Much deserved and well done my friend!!!!!!!!

I work at a Uni PA to the Dean so I know how hard work is expected to raise to such a position. Congratulations...what area is your specialty?

Thanks everyone!!! It means a lot to me.

Emeralddancer--I'm going to try to be there, though still trying to figure out my arrangements. Don't bother with wine or champagne, though, really! I'm more of an M+Ms kind of gal anyway!

QPO--I'm in the English Department. My specialty field is 20th Century British Literature. I'm at a small liberal arts college (~1700 undergrads), though, so I teach a wide range of classes, from first-year composition to the senior research seminar, in addition to covering Victorian-21st century British literature. I also teach some Gender Studies, because that is another interest of mine. My department has 11 tenure-stream professors (7 with tenure, 4 hopefully on their way), 2 full-time lecturers, and typically 3-5 adjuncts.

Joe-- ;) One of the goals I haven't ticked off the list is to get my current research published as a book. That should be enough to keep me out of trouble for the time being. Maybe.

Chiron--I actually don't have any grad students! My college does run master's level classes, but that is almost a totally separate gig, with classes at night, and I've never taught in that program. I did, however, take my senior research seminar students out for drinks and appetizers two days before I got my news, to celebrate their completion of THEIR work.

SDSalsaguy-- :) Thanks. One for the team! So, can I cash in for a celebratory general dance next time we're at a comp together? Maybe a west coast swing....

Thanks again, everyone!
