Charging $100/per dance on the competition

I would like to start competing and ask my pro how much my first local competition might cost.

My Standard instructor told me that his per dance fee is $100.
So if it 10 dances, it is $1000 only for his fees plus about $300 for organizer.
That is for local competition in NJ area.

Another pro told me that his flat fee is $350 for all the dances (I have to verify that, but that how I understood)

Both are fro Eastern Europe, but one standard, one Latin, from different studios.

I am taken a lot of standard lessons, but was overwhelmed with $100/per dance fee.

Both instructors charge $75/45 min lesson.

Is $100 per floor fee outrageous or normal?
This is going to be my first competition and I am wondering if it is a complete rip off?

It varies a lot, franchise vs open comp, level of the teacher, etc. For a first compt hough, I sure wouldn't pay that much. I paid 60 for comp last year, think it's 65 or 70 this year, and will liekly go up again next year, as they just posted schedule and it's at more expensive venue.

It does vary greatly as ETP said - some do flat and some do per dance.

But for me personally, at $100/dance for pro alone, I wouldn't be competing - it would really cut into the number of comps I could do and I'm just not sure it would be worth it to me at that price. There are enough pros in NJ/NY area that charge much less (including my own) and are more than capable of getting the job done...and done well.

It all depends on the teacher. I've heard of anything from a sliding scale based on the number of dances you do, going down to about $10 per dance, up to "the sky is the limit" with pros with excellent competitive resumes that charge $5k or $10k flat fee for the competition.

If you don't feel comfortable with the rate, then don't do the competition and look around for another teacher whose rate you are comfortable with. In general, though, the better and more highly-titled the teacher, the higher the rate is.

Don't lose your head: Pro/Am can get VERY expensive and it's not a good idea to go into debt over your dancing.

Is there any level difference between pro 1 and pro 2? Did you check their credentials?

If no substantial level difference, take pro 2.

So, essentially it is $130/dance if you factor in the organizer's costs. $1300. That is probably more than I have paid for a drive-to local comp, but like the others have said, you'll find quite a fluctuation in prices (and price structures) in the competitive world.

Yep - pay in cash as you go is a helpful approach.

To the OP...I've heard of $4K-7K for 10 dances per comp as a top pro's fee. That should put things in perspective for you.

I would find out to if he has other students competing the same weekend. Or if he is competing pro/pro. That can defray the costs of paying for the hotel, food, etc .... or am I wrong?

yeah, talk to/ask other students and get informed, agree with fascination and Larinda, you need to get every piece of details, find out the arrangement of who pays hotel, how many nights you or him have to be at comp hotel, time schedule of your event and his event; if he makes you pay for his hotel, try to check out if he is staying extra days/nights just to accommodate your event; share cost with other students definitely great idea.
