Choreography Resources

Can anyone suggest any resources for ideas/guidelines/best practices for putting together standard routines (e.g. a competition routine)? Thank You.

Your friendly local dance coach? There are just so many factors, from intentions, to level of dance, to partnership. You can cobble something together yourself, at pretty much any level, watching videos of what others are doing, but even top pros use other professionals to help put together their routines, so maybe they know something

I would be curious about this too. I think there can be differences in open gold depending on the level of the event (novice, pre-champ, champ). Would love to see more routines published online.

Maybe we could have a fun thread "My favourite long side is" with answers like "Waltz: DRS, Fallaway, DRS, Telemark, 4-6 weave (Man doing Lady's steps), Chasse Roll to R, Open impetus" then we would have some long sides to choose from? No idea if it would be possible to construct choreography like this or not!

Google is your friend. I found 3-4 sites that had Standard routines on them awhile back. Don't remember the sites offhand though.

Also DVIDA manuals.

To compose "walls" of bronze standard I use dancecentral dot info, the Dan Calloway routines, the short amalgamations at the end of each chapter in the Alex Moore book, and some DVDs (I have the Marcus & Karen series and the Victor V & Heather S series). And then when we want to vary those we look up precedes and follows in the little grey book. We keep the comp choreo as simple as possible so we can focus on clean technique. But then, we're bronze.

I would look up champions/coaches in your area. Watching from a DVD and learning the ins-and-outs on how and why are two totally different things.

When I was putting together my syllabus routines, I mainly used the grey book, as I'm sure most others do. There are also resources like ballroomguide.com that help demonstrate the figures and show how they work. But I second what most people here are saying -- there's really no substitute for an in-person lesson with a knowledgable (certified, if possible) pro.

I was not suggesting learning how to dance from books and videos. For that we have our teacher and the coaches he brings. Just for learning the information about figures, and to choreograph comp routines the textbooks (paper or digital) are useful. No need to spend lesson time to compose Feather, Reverse Turn w/FF, 3step, Natural w/ Hesitation ending. The Standard bronze routines are the nursery rhymes of ballroom. (I mean that in a positive way, a shared lexicon.) Then use the teacher to learn the skills to execute that choreo.
