Cleaning suede bottoms

Hmm, that's really interesting! :P I just followed SD's advice though, and got myself the "Sole-Saver," and I like it quite a bit... Haven't gotten a chance to use it though because my shoes were sold out and in backlog! :cry: :cry: :cry: It's a tragedy on par with Shakespeare's! (Okay, not really, but what's a dance obsessed girl to do without her proper shoes?!

The only thing you really need is the really evil looking wire shoebrush.
The file card, it's hardware store (as opposed to dance shoe store) cousin will sort of work, but it's not really sharp. A barbecue brush is okay for dusty floors, but it can almost drive the dust deeper into the suede.

Some people worry about wearing out the soles by brushing to hard - I haven't seen it happen as the uppers on mine always tear first (I sew the rips up with carpet thread and then they tear someplace else)

I guess there are things like saddle soap you could do to preserve the uppers, but realistically, you can get so many hours out of a pair of leather dance shoes that you will probably spend more on bottled water than on shoes. Shoes just feel expensive because you have to shell it all out at once.

(The exception of course would be lady's satin pumps... those can get trashed in as little as a month if used heavily on an imperfect floor)
 
Hmmm I'm going to have to correlate the cost of water drank while dancing vs the cost of dance shoes. Now I drink 2 bottles per session 3-4 x a week some times more and I go through 2 pairs of shoes in 4mos

Nothing trashes a pair of satin pumps faster than a leader with dirty feet :wink:
 
Hmm ok so either I'm not drinking enough water or spending too much on shoes as I drink $30 of water for every $100 worth of shoes I use up. I'm really sensitive about the wear I put in my shoes. After doing ballet for so many years you know the pitfalls of wearing dead shoes. Though I think more of a danger for heeling wearing women than men and I think men could safely wear their shoes for longer.
 
I totally trash my shoes, dance on sh** for floors, wear all the pretty gold/silver coating off but somehow manage to keep the soles intact! Since salsa entails dancing on the ball of one' foot & not the heel, my heels are in perfect condition. At the studio where I practice, I have to put on heel-protectors, but they're the leather, tape-on type and are getting pretty worn. (I like these better than the plastic type as you can brush them with a shoe brush) When I want to dance on my heel(like when I want to do funky shines w/hip hop moves, etc) I switch to jazz shoes. These I trash as well but they seem to be holding up. I am about to order a couple pair you're supposed to be able to pointe in. Gonna try to do that Michael Jackson move... :wink:

The moonwalk or the "sidefloats?" Or both?! :D I *love* the moonwalk, and I can do that okay to a degree, but alas, I don't think I'll *ever* learn the "sidefloats!!!" :wink:

A file brush I believe is a wire brush with a wooden handle, for mechanic work like cleaning old gaskets off engine parts, a wire brush ,there are all sizes and styles of bristles.

No, the move where he pointes with both feet, bent kneed, arms akimbo, back slightly hunched over. I can't pointe in the jazz shooz I have now, so I'm going to order two new pair tomorrow(gotta get different colors!). :D

Reviving this thread because I couldn't find anything on a search...

I accidentally stepped in some spilled soda last night at a social, what's the best way to get the sticky stuff off of my soles?

These are my primary practice shoes at the moment, I really don't want them all icky. Thanks!
 
What's the deal with sandpaper for leather soled shoes?

What's it for? How often do you use it? Coarse grit or fine grit? Regular old hardware store sandpaper, or special dance sandpaper?

I'm just kind of...EEK!!!...right now because I've been dancing in leather soled shoes exclusively now for a while, and have never done anything with sandpaper.
