Cold vs Hot weather

Have anybody ever noticed that dances like salsa, bachata etc work better in warmer countries and tango in colder countries?

Somebody told me that.

The sad thing is that for 4 months my bar/dance club has tried to promote Argentine tango but it's not really working (however salsa nights are always big). We are losing too much money on the tango

Tango can still work but then it has to be inside in a AC room. Apparently. The venue is really beautiful but in spite of continuously advertising it's not working. We need to do tango less often and in fitness centers instead.

That sucks when you love dancing tango...

My preference is just the opposite: I live in Hamburg, north of Germany, and the climate feels almost nordic. But I hate to dance tango in winter. I always long for the summer and the tango open air season. In winter I prefer salsa. If not the weather, the music is hot then.

Was it possible for you to arrange tango on the beach gatherings. (In summer vacations I always dance tango in the south somewhere around the mediterranean sea).

Surely people in your part of the world would love to tango on the beach, too! Watch:

Well, with salsa and bachata there isn't quite the body contact there is in tango, so you're not sharing as much of your body heat.

Ummm.... no?

Mind you, there may be some correlation - Finnish tango's a big scene, but I've never heard of Finnish salsa.

Sorry to hear that. But I suspect that's not the climate, that's some other factor (marketing, clientele, teachers, or something).

I teach in a fitness centre. A/C is nice. But I don't think it makes much difference in terms of attracting people.

One explanation for the difference might be that salsa is a comparatively easy dance, and tango is comparatively difficult. Lots of people can pick up enough salsa to enjoy social dancing in an hour or two (not necessarily to any very exacting standard), whereas it takes rather longer before anyone will dance tango with you except out of charity.

would not second that. For me, I found salsa much more difficult in the beginning than tango, whereas tango turns out really difficult from the third year on.
