Colored shoes in Standard?

I would be interested to hear replies from people who've worn leather, because I'm about ready to fling my Supadance 1008s at the wall--I find them stiff, unsupportive, and impossible to articulate the foot in. I'm actually MUCH more comfortable in my Latin sandals! I dont' find the satin gives at all and it definitely doesn't mold to my foot. It just pinches and cramps.

I totally agree with you! I hate satin courts! I wore them for comps and shows but that's it. I practiced in leather courts and teaching shoes (up until right before the comp.)

I have satin smooth shoes and leather court shoes. I like the leather ones much, much better. Its easier to create a point toe line in the leather shoes. When I get to be the level of the top dancers, I'll get the colored shoes. In the meantime, hanging out here in pre-bronze for the next two or three years, I'll stick with the tan/nude shoes!

How good is your footwork? :) The black shoes against the wood floor will make your feet very noticeable. I know what you mean, looking at the combo of dark dress and nude shoes from a fashion sense, but that's not how they will be looked at.

I agree - if your footwork is perfect wear the black shoes otherwise skin coloured is a must. I wore a black pair once with a dark coloured dress and afterwards about 4 different adjudicators came up to me and advised me not to wear them as it made any footwork errors more noticable. This was quite a shock as my footwork is normally fairly good for most dances. - mummsie

Then they made the decision that since most everyone preferred the flare or ids heel, they should ditch the slim heel.

Ugh, who says they are preferred? I see pros wearing slim heels all the time and many people I know refuse to wear flares. Those are just not good for standard!

here's the thing...if you are good enough to be at blackpool you can darn well wear whatever color shoe you want...if you are an beginning am dancer in the midwest who wants to look like they know the score...wear a flesh tone satin shoe.....

Sure... but what is ultimately good for dancing may not be what is popular.

Part of the popularity of the flared heels is that they allegedly feel more stable... which is probably true if you aren't planning on making serious use of your feet.

The problem now is that potentially serious students may waste money on bad, limiting shoes, not knowing about the good ones that are made if they aren't stocked.

I like the look of nude leather shoes--even less obtrusive than satin because they don't shine. Any opinions on how they would go over at comps?

Ah, but everything is shiny in ballroom! People are now putting rhinestones, jewelry, etc. on their shoes. Overkill? Maybe, but this IS ballroom dancing:)

Seriously though... I prefer the look of satin nude shoes to any other look in competition. With a caveat that, with certain costumes and black fishnets, I love black shoes for latin.

I've also been considering buying black satin (do those exist?) shoes of the same style I wear in comps for practice because I only seem to ever wear black pants or skirts in practice.

That's what I do--same shoe, but in black suede (or nubuck, I guess they call it). They do make them in black satin as well, don't know how big a selection. I've also dyed a pair of old comp shoes black when they were dirty but danceable for practice shoes.

My only beef with satin courts is how fast uppers wear out. This was the main reason why I wanted a leather practice pair with the same heel as I use for competing.

I used to have a 1008 leather but didn't like it much. I now use 1023 satin and it my HG shoes I think.

ETA:

I dont care how ratty my practice shoes look as long as it is functional.

I still feel that I like satin better !

I've seen a pair of black standard shoes on one of the pro girls, actually quite nice. But she has very neat foot work. I've seen a few pro girls used colored std shoes matching their dresses, very neat. But could be costly, imagine if she sells her dress, she has to prepare her shoes with the color matching her new dress? Fresh satin is safest, and looks good matching with most color dresses.
