Comp thoughts

Ok,so here are my thoughts in answer to Cha Cha mama.

1.As I really do not deal with many amateurs when I was involved in San Diego my main concern was for pro-am and pro couples.

2 I definately want more people doing less dances.I have been to some comps with a lot of entries but just a few students. The ballroom needs energy plus a lot of pro-am competitors get angry when they see people doing multiple levels.(pre-bronze-silver).I do not care as long as they do not dance out of syllabus but most pro-am students do.

3 All prices should be put on the web-site.If people want to know they can always find out so why try to hide them.people deserve to know what they are paying for.

4 I have never been involved with a comp that ran behind time either NDCA or collegiate. In order for this to happen the chairman ,MC and DJ all have to work together. There is nothing worse than a comp that runs late.Recently I have noticed that the pro-am parts of comps have been bang on time or early. It normally is the evening sessions with the pros and amateurs that have caused the problems.

5 It would be great if the age catorgories and rules were standardised. There is however one problem, not all comps run for the same amount of time .Maybe the answer is for NDCA to say this is what you can have for a 1-day,2-day,3-day or longer comp.

6 Make all comps finish by 12 at the latest so we can all have a good party.

Cheers Chris

umm yes, i really always wondered why the pro-am fees are a big secret, the price list on the web is usually password protected or i need to talk to my instructor for me to see the packet, i dont understand, id like to prepare for how much im shelling out and if im interested at a comp beforehand and not be shocked at the last minute with the fees

But if prices were disclosed, then students would know how much their instructor's markup is!

on that note...I have always had an instrutor who was willing to show me the program and who was able to explain his pricing, frankly, they have both been perfectly willing to let me assemble my entries by taking the program with me to figure it out...I wouldn't ever have one who didn't

Depends whether or not you have heats in the morning. Or are an iron man, like Chris J. ;)

And this is a bad thing? I've always known the markup when I went to a competition, i.e. price per entry, fee per day for showing up, and responsibliity for accommodations.

I'm sure, too. I do think prices should be posted, though. I'm doing a competition in a few weeks (the first in a long time), and pro gave detailed breakdown of the fees.

Thank you! I'm not sure how it happened that I'm going to a competition again. After the last one, I had thought never again; it was not a good expereience on a lot of levels. I guess never say never.

I've always checked on that, and I think most long-term competitors learn to. A good studio is able to justify they're markup and provide services to do so, ranging from last-minute spot coaching and encouragement from your teachers to holding hair and makeup sessions for their students. Everyone knows ballroom competition is expensive; we simply expect something for our money.
