Competition dress choice; heel height; re-wearing dresses; & salsa/mambo question

Reviving the thread to ask what might be a dumb question - what order does everything go? Underwear (?), bodysuit or dance pants, then fishnets?
There's no such thing as a dumb question, especially when ladies' "infrastructure" garments change all the time.

Short answer: whatever works best for YOU.

This is what has worked best for me personally: I sew the waistband of my fishnets to the band of my bra (that way I avoid the muffin top look created by the tight waistband, AND ensure that the fishnets don't roll down to my crotch if I cut off the waistband). That's what I put on first. Next I put on a Spanx bodysuit (which smooths down everything from over my shoulders down to mid-thigh). Last, I put on my dress.

Note: this is only for certain Rhythm dresses. I don't wear a mid-thigh length Spanx if my skirt opens way out (like up to my waist) when I spin. For those dresses, I wear the leotard version of the Spanx bodysuit.

In smooth dresses, I usually skip all that crap and just rely on the built-in bodysuit of the dress - no Spanx, no undies, no fishnets - plus my own bra. (I'm still searching for a dress with a built-in bra or bra cups that will adequately support my - uhh - rather heavy, exact-opposite-of-perky, DD boobs. The GoodLines Tape is very good, but even that stuff doesn't solve all my bust problems [especially since my skin reacts Very Very Badly to adhesives].)

Re: fishnets in general: they don't necessarily take the place of tanning. If you're gonna wear them, it's best to be very tan underneath first. I wear them because they dramatically smooth out the lumps & bumps & jiggles in my thighs & hips & rear. If I had 0% body fat, like a plastic doll does; or if I had less self-consciousness about my body image, I wouldn't wear them. (If you do a DF search for the term "Cheese Grater Fishnets" you'll understand why.)

Please share how on earth you use the ladies room between heats.

TMI! Be careful what you ask for, lol. But you did ask!

The Spanx full-thigh bodysuits have a crotch made of 2 thin layers of overlapping fabric that can be parted, and the leotard style bodysuits have crotch hooks that can be unfastened. And the bodysuit in the dress has crotch hooks as well.
And the fishnets - umm - well, I mean, they're nothing but holes, right?
And btw, if you have a dress that does NOT have crotch hooks, you just pull the fabric to the side and pee carefully.

But being serious, my dance comp experience has been limited to bronze smooth & rhythm. This means the longest time I needed to be "in costume" was around 3 hours.

In between our back-to-back singles and recalls in back-to-back age groups, I didn't have enough time to get a drink, much less visit the bathroom. And bcs I was sweating so profusely, I didn't have any need to go there anyway. When we had breaks after the singles and before the multis, they were long enough breaks that I could return to my hotel room to undress/pee/re-dress myself...although I was so dehydrated I didn't need to pee until long after we were finished dancing for the day.

I can't also dance without fishnets even on smooth dresses because some of them got long slits. They make my leg smoother looking. Lately, I've seen more ladies wearing shiny tights then fishnet just like how Taylor Swift does it or on the dwts. I'm glad it's a trend because sometimes get a bit jealous seeing ladies that don't need to hide anything or they are so confident that they just go out there dancing baring all their legs and body even they are like in the 70s. I wish I have their confidence

Some of you might have seen my question in a different thread about finding a smooth dress - I got 2 dresses today from a consigment vendor, and I like both but both have some issues. I have a question for the ladies about which dress (or none) they would pick:

Dress A: My favorite color, in a style I prefer and a shorter length. The cons are that it has a bra already sewn in that’s unnecessary for me and is slightly visible (but could be carefully cut out). It also doesn’t have a zipper or buttons so I’d have to pull it over my head to take it on or off. Would need to replace some stones. Would be ~$200

Dress B: A color I don’t love and style I like less but the dress is higher quality and has a bra and bodysuit. There’s a section of fabric that’s damaged but not super visible and the dress may be a little too long. Otherwise it fits well. Would be ~$315.

I’m not planning on going to a comp in May anymore, so there’s not a huge sense of urgency, but I do need to decide if I’m keeping the dresses within three days (so Saturday, I think? unsure if today counts as a day). I have a lesson Friday and will also ask his opinion. Happy to pm photos if anyone is super curious

Which dress do you feel you look better in? Do you feel beautiful in it? The answers may guide you. And you do have time. Good luck.

If those were your only 2 choices, it sounds like you prefer Dress A. Removing a sewn-in bra is relatively easy.

But those are not your only 2 choices; they’re just the only 2 you’re considering right now. If you no longer have a time crunch, you can send them both back & keep looking. You’ll know the right dress when you put it on.

OTOH, $200 is pretty good for a “starter dress,” even if it doesn’t tick all the boxes.

Sounds like A is a better choice as long as it fits you well and you feel good in it. The cup removal is super easy and you could probably have a tailor add a zipper or button to help it on easier at that same time. Especially at that price point.

Focusing on the very first part of this thread title, “competition dress choice,” I have a new question.

As I mentioned in other threads, I recently bought a new-to-me aqua-blue smooth dress that is The Best Dress Ever (for me), & Pro & I both love it. I wore it in a lesson for about 15 minutes, and it moves even better than it looks. It’s my first truly “grown-up” smooth gown, and I’ve been looking forward to finally getting to wear it when we compete at Manhattan in a couple weeks.

But Pro threw a wrench in the works at yesterday’s lesson. He’s been watching us in the wall mirrors more than usual, and stopping frequently during lessons to watch video clips of whatever we’ve just done, and he usually makes some positive comment like, “wow - that looks a lot better than it felt!” (From him, that’s a genuine compliment, not a backhanded one.) He has been full of praise about the overall improvement in my smooth dancing.

So yesterday, he looked at me musingly and said, “I don’t think you should wear your new dress for Newcomer Silver.” I said, “it’s not ‘newcomer’ silver - it’s just PRE silver, and we’re also doing intermediate & full silver singles.” He shrugged. “Ok, pre, newcomer, whatever. Either way, that dress doesn’t belong in early silver levels. It’ll be great for the championship & scholarship, but I think you should wear a different dress for at least the first few sets of singles.”

Ummmm - what?!?!??

I’ve never changed dresses during a comp before. I know a lot of women do, but not me. And I don’t have a second dress that fits as well or looks as great as this one, & I told him so. He asked, “what about the bright pink Chrisanne you wore at Ohio?” I said maybe, but I’ve lost a good bit of weight since then, so it’s a little loose; and the looseness means the bottom of the skirt is lower than it used to be. I’m legit concerned I’ll catch my heels in it, especially during tango. He told me to bring it to a lesson this week so we can test it out, since there might still be enough time to get it altered before Manhattan.

I gave him my other arguments, like: how do I make sure my hair & makeup match the style & color of both dresses? What if my confidence is much lower in the pink dress, & that hurts my performance? I want the judges to recognize me from the singles when we dance in the multis - won’t that be easier if I’m wearing the same recognizable dress?

He said even if it’s the same judging panel for both the singles & the multis, they’ll recognize me by my dancing, not my dress (assuming they recognize me at all, that is [one can only hope]); and there are lots of makeup options that will work with ANY color of dress. The only concern of mine he took at all seriously was the one about whether the dress would impact my confidence (and we both know from experience that my level of confidence absolutely DOES affect my performance), especially if part of my brain is constantly worrying about whether my heels will get caught in the hem.

And then there are also some shallow but practical considerations, such as the fact that the pink dress has a moderately high back and one long sleeve; while the aqua one is completely backless and sleeveless…so, when the pink dress makes me sweat during the singles, I better hope my airbrush spray tan remains really freaking solid.

Interestingly, the woman from whom I bought the dress told me she only ever wore it in her scholarships, not in her singles. And like I said before, I know that changing dresses for the scholarship is a common practice among Pro-Am ladies.

But the concept is sort of messing with my head. Yes, I’ve always BROUGHT a second dress to comps, but only in case of emergency, & I’ve never actually worn my backup dresses.

Otoh, Manhattan’s schedule last year had about two hours between singles & multis, which is plenty of time to change dresses & jewelry. And tbh, the aqua dress does have one significant flaw: it is very uncomfortable to sit down in. (Standing, dancing, anything upright is fine - but the torso is too short for me to sit down comfortably in it.)

So I’m going around in circles in my head about what to do. Pro pointed out that since I’m going to bring both dresses with me anyway (the pink one is my emergency backup, since it’s the only other dress I have that currently fits at all), I don’t have to decide what to wear until I’m actually at the comp.

Anyway, now that I’ve given you way more background information than you probably need, my question for you guys is this: what makes a dress “belong” in full silver smooth but not in lower levels? I don’t get it.

P.S. Reading my first few posts in this thread made me laugh. Holy cow - I was soooo naïve and inexperienced (and enthusiastic!) back then. Awwwww.

I have an old school coach that would STRONGLY prefer students to dress for their level (at comps—our showcases are big public events so everyone is expected to go all out despite level). I really take that to heart… BUT that is in amateur, not pro/am. I would happily change dresses as my pro requested though because of my experience with that coach. The day after you pro/am guys leave comps, they are marking amateurs in practice shoes with no hair done above the ones in full costume, so I promise they are looking past what you are wearing.

Do you have a colorful practice dress you love, that you can layer jewelry over?

Lots to address here...bottom line is to probably trust your pro and work on not letting the details get in your head...if your dress looks very open level...he may be thinking they will frown on your being in the pre silver heats...shrug...you can 2nd guess yourself to death but its rarely the minutia...if you think you'll dance poorly in the pink...THAT matters...likely nothing else... I always liked to put a clean dress on after sweating in one in the singles...

That’s very interesting to me that a dress could be out of place in silver. I don’t watch a ton of smooth, and only dance Standard so only know that people of all levels have very professional dresses. In fact the two bronze dancers who also dance with my Pro bought sponsored dresses.

So I don’t have any answers for you. Except maybe try the pink dress in a lesson and see what your pro says. He may think the new one is actually the right choice.

I only really noticed the open level at least in standard change dresses for finals.
