Competition Hair

Has anyone ever tried to "color" a hair piece or hair ext. from a lighter color down to a darker color? Talking about real human hair pieces here, not the fake synth. hair pieces.

Hey there - been lurking here for a bit and it looks like a good place to get advice on all sorts of topics so thought I would speak up :-) I am new to competing and so far have been getting my hair done professionally, typically in a bun. What I want to know is how to get it undone? It has taken me at least half an hour sometimes to get the elastic out of my bun! Have tried putting conditioner around the elastic while hair is dry, which helps a bit, but wondering if anyone has advice/tips?

Welcome!

I was told by one of the professional hair ladies to use tons and tons of conditioner in the shower. I think doing it on dry hair would be a lot harder. Put a lint trap in the shower drain, and get your hair soaked, use a lot of conditioner, and work everything (elastic, pins, hair net, etc) out gradually. After I got all the equipment out, I used shampoo to get the product (hair spray, etc) out, and then more conditioner after that!

Thank you! I did know about the conditioner first to get all the hairspray out but for some reason thought it would be easier to get the "equipment" (LOL - love that) out first. Will try removing whole mess in shower next time...

In the rare event that the elastic won't slip off my hair easily, I just take a nail scissors and snip through the elastic.

Thank you - I did think of that in my frustration but did not have one in hotel. And makes me kind of nervous to use scissors behind my head when can't see what I'm doing!

I usually take out the equipment before showering because I find in my hair once it gets wet the goopiness just spreads. I usually carefully pick out as many pins as I can, then unwind the elastic. I use covered elastics, uncovered elastics may be tougher to get out because they are more grippy. In that case, I'd stretch the elastic as much as I could (if it's a thin one, I'd try to intentionally break it) and then try to unwind the hair.

I pull out as much as I can before heading into the shower as well. And when I dance late, I just pull out stones, pins, nets and elastic and go to sleep, washing all the gunk out in the morning. (It's generally a huge source of amusement that there's so much gunk in my hair that it still looks "done" in the morning.) I don't typically need to use conditioner first, but will stand under the warm (not hot - creates a bigger mess!) water until everything softens, then shampoo twice and condition.

Fellow dancers are great help in getting all of the pins, etc. out of your hair. Usually teammates or friends, but I've been grabbed by random I-have-no-idea-who-that-was ladies and asked for help.

I'm the same as most of the above - i'll take out decorations and a lot of the pins (which always feels so nice after poking your scalp all day!). Then i stand in the shower and load on the conditioner and proceed the way raindance does it (mentioned above). I haven't timed myself but it probably ends up being a good 20 minute shower LOL. I really dislike sleeping in comp hair, which happens often since many of our events have us dancing on two days and I'll keep my hair 'did' right through. So it's my personal preference to wash it when i'm done, no matter how late at night LOL.

Yes, covered would be much easier. I can try bringing some next time, but suspect the stylist uses the uncovered ones because of their grip!

LOL, I did leave my hair in once, and yes, it was completely preserved!

Like in the bathroom, right? I am so past caring who zips/clips me in and out!

LOL, right now I'm dancing in the mornings, so taking it out mid-afternoon. But given the hour of makeup call, 4 p.m. can feel like midnight!

Have discovered Awapuhi hair conditioner as a mask. I lay it into my hair, especially the ends. Put it in my hair after shampoo, Wait 20 minutes with a plastic hair cap up and some blow dryer heat, really takes care of all the havoc the comp does with all the product in my hair. Amazing stuff!

Has anyone seen or done anything with a blingy headband before? I'm in the arduous process of growing out a pixie cut, and I think it's going to be a supremely awkward point by the end of August when I compete. I keep thinking that may be a nice way to contain it and get it out of my face, while giving it some sparkle. Thoughts?
