Cortinas

OK, my preference is that the cortina in NO way competes with nor effects the attained mood OF the dance music..it ought to be some form of innocuous elevator music...barely audible and only an obvious substitute for pure silence...give folks a chance to talk, etc.. I would like longer cortinas rather than shorter ones. Each tanda is more special that way...for me, anyway. Also, the longer cortina gives you a chance to escape from your dance partner (you waited until the last dance in the tanda to ask) without automaticly obligating you to another 3 or 4 songs.
I prefer 3 song tandas not 4 song ones.

non-danceable cortina music

In my home town some bars of salsa or swing music is played as a cortina. But the reaction is, that people start to dance, an annoying custom. But why do people start dancing to cortina music? In most cases the tandas are too uniform. My advice: non-danceable cortina music, and some non-tango tandas in between.

... I reckon elevator music is fine. I'd also suggest that it be very clearly non-AT in any way.

I was not as specific as I should have been. I'm wondering how DJs go about creating 30-40 second selections of music. Do you set start and stop times within iTunes? Do you build new tracks using Audacity?

Thanks.

Yes I use Audacity.

Since I'm a complete beginner at editing audio, I generally use the first 20-40 seconds of a track , and then either use Fade at the end, or tag on 2-3 seconds of silence.

I find I can only edit recordings that are mp3 format (not .aac). And the output has to be saved as .wav then converted by your music player.

Maybe these are the limitations of using the software for free. I'm not sure.

Has anyone found useful instructions for Audacity? ie ones which will get you up and going quickly?

Same here, I use the first 30 sec of something that is clearly not tango (e.g Start me up by the Rolling Stones, or the Samurai way from Ghost Dog soundtrack ) with a fade at the end.

I find high tempo folk music is quite good. For instance the start to the Waterboys "Good Ship Sirius" is one cortina I use.

I find anything too slow tempo is no good - there'll always be someone who tries to dance to it ;)

I forgot what it's called, but there is an add-on to Audacity that allows you to export to mp3 format.

There is also a recent free file converter available. Try this:

There are some tutorials that give some good ideas. Try a search. I know Audacity can do way more than I know how to do.

My favorite cortina is played on Sunday at Lo de Celia Tango Club in BsAs. Daniel Borelli (best DJ we have) uses Crusin' for Brusin' by Basia. It's has a cha-cha rhythm with English lyrics. I sing along.

Does he use the same cortina for all tandas?

Latin is the cortina of choice in this area as well. Approx. 30 - 40 secs w/ a fade. My method is to use the successive parts of the same song. when that one is done, I use another.
