Dana Reeves dies

Just read that Christopher Reeves widow, Dana, has died from lung cancer. I seem to recall she was diagnosed just a few months after he died? Apparently, she was a non-smoker.

In his 1998 autobiography, Still Me, the actor wrote that in the days immediately following his accident, both he and his mother were in favor of disconnecting the life-support machines and allowing him to die, but that his wife changed his mind.

"Dana came into the room...I mouthed my first lucid words to her: 'Maybe we should let me go,'" Reeve recalled in the memoir. "She said, 'I'm only going to say this once: I will support whatever you want to do because this is your life. And your decision. But I want you to know that I'll be with you for the long haul, no matter what.'"

"Then she added the words that saved my life: 'You're still you. And I love you.'"

From what I gather, if it hadn't been for Christopher Reeves and Dana's determination, science would not have made the progresses it made in stem cell research.

She has been, and will be an inspiration to me and I suspect many others.

I was very surprised to hear this on the news since last I heard was that she was responding well to treatment. Seems so unfair that one family would be visited by so much tragedy.

In one of the articles I ready, they said that in November she had responded well. Based on the accounts of love and devotion to her husband, perhaps the final loss of her mate was to much?

Yes, the family has had a lot of tragedy, but, think of the legacy of what they accomplished in that time and what they have achieved for those remaining behind.

I read a while back that she ignored her own sickness and illness while she was taking care of her husband. If they had diagnosed her sooner, she may have had a better chance. It's very sad and I'm so sorry for her young son. He's lost both parents now.

One of the articles I read mentioned that lung cancer in non smoking women was on the increase but they weren't sure whether secondary/passive smoking was playing a role. From what I recall, the article also said that lung cancer had no detectable symptoms and as such, when it is finally diagnosed, the person has had it for a while often, it is too late. :(

Their son was apparently born the same year they got married, the riding accident occured three years later. Christopher Reeves has two other children from a previous marriage.
