Dance Budgets for 2009

OK, so it is the beginning of the year and time to set a dance budget for 2009. I'm just curious how others' budgets compare to mine (not in terms of amounts, but in terms of allocation percentages).

My budget includes 4 categories (see below). Do others spend as much on Pro/Am comps as they spend on lessons?

40% on Lessons
40% on Pro/Am Comps (includes travel and lodging for out of town comps)
15% on Clothing
5% on Amateur Comps (local comps only)

I budget by the quarter...and it looks like lessons are 1/3 of the budget and comps are 2/3rds...that is roughly 2 or 3 comps per 4 months (depending upon how much I dance) c and @6 hours of lessons a week...I currently have no coaching b/c NP has more than enough high level info to keep me busy for the foreseeable future ...my dress budget, thanks to having sold a dress, will be a bit under 5K for the year....

This is my first full year competing (I started in November) and so I've been neglecting looking at how much this hobby is actually costing me until now. After putting it on paper, it was kind of shocking to see that the competitions add up to more than the lessons. In fact, I was wanting to compete more this year, but after seeing the figures in black and white, I found it hard to digest :-|

I'm not spending anything on dance dresses this year, unless I come across a totally awesome deal (IOW, a low priced resale that fits me and which I like). I have 3 dance dresses already (1 smooth, 1 standard and 1 rhythm/latin), and I have all the accessories to go with them.

I am not sure yet how I will allocate the rest of the funds. Probably will end up 50/50.

I spend all my money (and my husbands!) When I showed him my dance budget, he said "as long as there's money left over for dog food, I'm fine with it."

I married him for his sense of humor ;-)

somewhat more on lessons than on comps (maybe 65/35) because I don't have the time to compete more. I make most of my own dresses but my 'rhinestone' budget is about $600/yr.

yep...it depends on how one's pro charges..mine is fairly reasonable (given his calibre) for lessons...but comps ...well...that adds up...particularly since I dance all styles...but I do think it is key to preventing future problems to actually budget yourself and have some limits...and I speak from...um...not having done so at first

Besides food, rent, and minor personal expenses, all my money goes to dancing, might be 50% to comp, another 50% to comp and travel.
