Not specifically related to tango, but it DOES apply. I read this on Instagram.

"When you're dead, you don't know you're dead. All of the pain is felt by others. The same happens when you're dancing off beat."

---Jimi Hendrix

I expect this will resonate with more followers than leaders.

I only know this version: "Remember, when you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It is only painful for others. The same applies when you are stupid." And that does make a certain amount of sense.

Is there a plausible source for the quote? ("Instagram" is no such, btw.)
And in my opinion it DOES only apply if Jimi Hendrix had a partner dance in mind.

Of course, leaders also have the task of setting the pace, whether they feel it or not.
But what about female followers who miss the beat when trying to learn to lead, do they feel it or don't they feel it?

(I'm ignoring the hyphen now) Off beat is a skillful rhythmic interpretation and not a lack of sense of rhythm.
The difference is doing or dancing it intentionally compared to not able to dance on the beat. In later category are those that may realise they are offbeat without intention but can’t correct themselves and those that don’t know they are offbeat.

Definitely not Tango-specific, but I don't think it's follower-specific, either. If as a lead, I feel my partner is off-time, I can try help my partner feel the time more accurately. If as a follow, I feel that off-time thing, I'm basically stuck with it for the duration of the dance. I admire those lady teachers who deal with their off-time pro-am men students so beautifully, I can't even see them doing it.

I love it. Will start using it today when I teach

I suspect this is an adaptation of:

"When you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It's only painful & difficult for others. The same applies when you are stupid." — Ricky Gervais (twitter post @rickygervais, 4:16 AM · Oct 30, 2013)
Such a good quote.
