everyone or most people here would know that if you leave a studio under bad terms, they are going to mark you last or bad at a comp...

who thinks that judges for each certain event should be selected according to the couples...

eg. if there are 5 judges on the floor and 4 of which were from your old studio from which you left under bad terms...they arent going to mark you very well are they...even if you deserve 1st

how could this problem be overcome?

What kind of comps are you going to? Because you could just go to comps where those people aren't judging.

Hi Snuggles,
Yes, there's one way you could overcome this, that is, dance the best you can and ignore the judges.

well this problem hasnt happened to me...yet...but i have seen it happen to people that left my studio (the teachers putting them last)

i have recently left my studio and was concerned that this was going to happen to me too...

The teachers at my studio are judges at most comps here... all the small ones and most bigger comps too...

we left the studio because my partner lives 5 hours away from me and was travelling down on weekends for a weekend jammed with lessons. He is now in year 12 and doing major exams and is unable to travel down weekends so i am going to his old studio at his house... My studio wasnt impressed with this.
we havent gone back to comps yet as we are getting all new choreography.

I just wished that comps were'nt judged on favouritism and judged purely on who is best and deserves 1st...

Thankyou

Hi Snuggles,
I think you should ask yourself whether you are aiming to dance for the marks from judges or you are aiming to dance to improve yourself and feeling the enjoyment of surpassing your potentials. Whenever I compete, I felt very happy after an event that I've done my best performance on the dance floor, even though I've had bad marks against me. I hope you will feel the same too.

***CYNICAL OPINION BELOW..DO NOT READ IF YOU NEVER COMPETED..***
So, for a while you benefitted from the system, getting higher marks than you deserved, just because you were belonging to their stable. Now you'll get worse marks but that's only fair...
(Pun intended, but you get the idea)

If you think they will mark you poorly because you have "dumped" them...then don't "dump" them. There are many other little things that they were doing, besides teaching patterns and techniques, on your lessons. You can continue to involve them in them all sorts of ways.

You might try to attend your teacher's birthday party just to keep the ties in and letting him/her know that you're still respect him/her. Always puts a smile on your face when you come face to face with him/her in the competition venue, even though you knew he/she will give you bad marks anyway, but hopefully he will give you a 5 instead of a 6, that should help a bit in your overall scoring standing.

Yes, I know that there is meanness and unfairness out there -- I'm not totally naive.

But are you sure that these judges are unfairly marking down people who've left their studio? Or is it at least possible that they're marking the competitors as they really see them?

And, from what you said, Snuggles, it doesn't sound as if you've left the studio under bad circumstances. You left for perfectly understandable reasons. I can't see why any fair-minded studio owner/judge would mark you down for moving to be closer to your partner.

But I also think Larinda's suggestion is a good one. Is it possibe to continue some (even low) level of coaching at your old studio? It might be good for you, anyway, just to get more judges' perspectives on your dancing. Does that make sense?

This is a great thing to do, and in fact I have managed to do it successfully. I got a new latin dance instructor about 3 months ago in a different studio. But since I still take modern lessons in my old studio, I see my old instructor a lot. At first, I feel weird, and didn't let him know that I am actually still taking lessons elsewhere. Then, we had some opportunities to hang out together, and become closer as friends, not teacher and student. I then told him about my new teacher, and he doesn't seem to be bothered. We still hang out a lot, and we are actually closer now than we have ever had. We even danced together sometimes at clubs when we hang out.

Hi chiwenl,
Good for you ... That's what I did too to the latin teacher I've had lessons from him a few years back and we are still good friends.

yes...no need to break up completely when one stops taking classes with a teacher.
