I am quoting front page of Danceplaza. But, I feel that they are not in a position to make this statement... I agree there is a problem in ballroom world that currently has no solution with regards to coaches judging but its something that happens all the time and nobody should be taking a moral stance on this. Specially when it involves one of the top coaches in the world who is judging one of the top couples that technically are not really even contested at this event. Of course all couples in the final are strong dancers but Mirko is definitely a step above the rest in that field... I feel annoyed reading the below note from Danceplaza. Partially of course because I love and highly respect the coach and had probably some of my best lessons ever with him. I wonder what everyone else thinks?? Of course Danceplaza can put whatever they want on their front page but REALLY???

WDSF PD European Standard 2013 – Leipzig Germany

First of all I write this comment with respect to ALL WDSF Professional Competitors who participated at the WDSF PD European Standard Championships 2013. Nobody can blame you, and congratulations with your results.

Receiving the results I noticed that this European Championship had not much competitors and some future new champions were not on the list why…? Actually this Championship was very degraded in level and number of competitors.

The WDSF European Championships is a major competition and many top couples prepare several months towards this Championship. A WDSF European Champion title is a title to proud of and is a dream for all youth dancers, but…… not this year..!

Looking into the adjudicator’s panel some questions came into my mind in relation to some humans and how they deal with fair play..!!
  • Why does the WDSF invite Fabio Selmi as an adjudicator while the whole world knows that he is the main coach of the winners Mirko Gozzoli and Edita Daniute who did actually invite the judges?
  • Why does adjudicator Fabio Selmi accept such an invitation, knowing that his own couple is dancing?
  • How and what should Mirko and Edita feel and think, when listening to their national anthem at the price presentation, knowing that their main coach was in the adjudicator panel?

Conclusion: Fair play….NOT on THIS Championship :-(

For those couples who where not on this competition, be proud that you were not competing. I hope for you and the DanceSport that fair play will return in the near future :)

I think we all have issues with this type of judging in one way or another, but at the same time... it's 1 judge. It's 1 judges opinion... There is a reason why there is a whole panel of judges, to make things fair. I don't know if it could be possible to make sure a completely impartial judging panel, when judging on a whole is subjective. I think the person who wrote this article was completely out of line.

Mirko and Edita would have won even if Fabio were not judging .SO it makes NO sense. Congratulating couples who didn't participate is out of line. If you didn't participate, you lost because you took yourself out of the game and didn't try. How is that worthy of praise?

Precisely. (emphasis added).

How is this any different from at least half the competitions out there (i.e. where one's primary coach is on the judging panel)?

Whether this should be the case in ballroom is anther question (although the logistics and economics involved make clear why this happens), but there isn't anything unusual about this particular incident.

I personally think it's almost impossible to assemble a panel to judge the top 6 professional couples in Ballroom or Latin or Rhythm or Smooth at National, any-Continental or World level without having an intersection between judge (as occasional teacher or coach) and couple (as student).

The fact that I coach Riccardo and Yulia steadily (in my dreams, yes) doesn't mean it will be hard for me to acknowledge that Michael and Joanna or Sergey and Melia are producing, right before my eyes, better paso dobles. Maybe I will take it into account during our next lesson. But right now, they're placing third.

It isn't any different and this is part of the reason why I was so surprised to see this post, and the tone of the post on danceplaza.

Their attitude rubs me the wrong way too, mainly because they are questioning the integrity of every single judge out there. I mean what judge hasn't judged a student before? But even that aside, what proof do they have that a primary coach on the judging panel is beneficial for a couple? Our coaches are the ones most intimately familiar with our shortcomings.

Ι don't compete but I can see where this is coming from. I can't say I agree nor do I disagree;it's a bit hard to say you know...

IMV, people who really have an issue with this sort of thing ought to have an issue with the fact that it probably happens at nearly every comp and sometimes to a far more bizarre result...so yea, seems a tad personal

well, okay....and I like to live in that world too....that being said, I also don't think it is heresy to question the integrity of judges...I do think it is unfair to do so about one particualr judge at one particular event, in print, when the result was not really in contention...
