Dancing with the Stars' Heather Mills Wins by Losing

Heather Mills with Jonathan Roberts, Dancing with the Stars

It was a very strong showing. Contrary to what many had predicted, amputee Heather Mills didn't get kicked off ABC's Dancing with the Stars the first elimination week. Or the second. Or the fourth. She survived until last night, shocking the judges and impressing voters enough to keep her in the game a long time and give her a respectable seventh-place finish out of 11 dancers. Mills says she knew on Monday night that her dancing days were numbered, exhausted as she was after commuting for the first time from L.A. to London and back in the same week. "That's the good thing about never drinking coffee," she says. "When you need it, you have one and it works."

But after she had done the fiery Latin dance, the paso doble, the judges said again that they wanted to see stronger arms, a more polished upper body.

"When the judges say I should take ballet, I say when?" said Mills right after the Monday night performance show. "When am I ever going to have the time? And when can I focus on my upper half when I'm just lucky my feet are keeping me upright? So all I can do is listen and try to do my best."

Her best turned out to be astonishing. Dips, spins, lifts. She was game for anything and the choreography was often far more complicated than that of her two-legged competitors. And her professional partner, Jonathan Roberts, had the perfect, patient, soft-sell approach for this female firebrand who has attracted enough controversy for three lifetimes. "Jonathan's voice is in my head," says Mills. "He'll say, 'Get your shoulders down!' And when I feel myself slouching, I go, Ooh. No. Because when I was younger, I had huge boobs. It sounds rude. But anyone with a big chest knows, you hunch over. So now it's like — chest out. Shoulders down."

And back to the life she's carved out for herself in England, where she's been vilified as the estranged wife of the beloved Sir Paul McCartney. The terrible publicity over the last year has put a real damper on her fundraising for endangered animals and cleaning up landmines. But now, because of Dancing with the Stars, "people are donating again," she says. "Because what people didn't realize was that when they're making up rubbish about me in the press, it affects thousands of lives. I'm responsible for nine countries being funded to be de-mined. So now, everyone wants to know how they can help."

The show has also helped her on a personal level. Her daughter, 3-year-old Beatrice, suddenly thinks mom is cool. "It's made my daughter fall totally madly in love with me," says Mills. "She was in love with me before, but now she thinks I'm a princess. And she's dancing all the time. She's going to ballet and tap."

In the end, Mills did a lot more dancing than she had originally bargained for. She assumed, because of the bad overseas press that dragged her down like a heavy costume, that she wouldn't last more than a couple of weeks. But even before the show got started, she knew even minimal participation would pay off "because the fee that they gave me in the beginning will go to my charities," she said at the time. "[That] will save loads and loads of animals and help fit up some kids with artificial limbs. So that's already done, just by me participating in the first show. If I go past that, that's just a bonus."

She got a big fat bonus.

If America loves her so much - feel free to keep her!

I wouldn't care if she didn't come back to us ever again.

Okay all, let's not start the Mills controversy again....let's keep to no personal attacks, name calling etc.

Beto, you just loooove to make my life interesting don't you?

p.s. CaroUK, I'm not picking on you specifically....you may not have seen our DWTS thread that went a bit out of bounds when the inclusion of Ms. Mills on the show was announced.

To be fair, if someone posts a completely sycophantic article, it's not unreasonable for people to comment on it.

The article has nothing about dancing, it's all personality-based, so any comments and responses would naturally be along those lines.

I don't have much of an opinion about Ms Mills, personally - the only interest I have is in how physical disabilities affect dancing generally, but every discussion tends to zoom into personality-focussed debates...

No, not at all. I just saw the article on TV Guide and posted it here. Didn't think about the possible fallout at the time. Hope it hasn't caused trouble.

Naw Beto, just giving you a hard time *grin* ....we do appreciate your finding articles and posting them here for our reading pleasure.

Nope - didn't think you were having a go.......

Just that I live near Sir Paul.... have loved him and his work for more years than I care to remember (one reason I went to University in Liverpool...). I think he's fab..... but alas never have had any time for Heather.....

I will never understand how people can have such strong opinions about people who they don't even know...I can't even figure out the ones around me ....

I can't even muster up the energy to hold such strong opinions about the people I do know, and ask my husband, I'm a VERY opinionated gal!;)

OK, Heather's dancing ability came as a big surprise - she was waaay better than a lot of folk thought she would be.

In fact - if the media hadn't kept harping on about the prosthetic leg, it would have been hard to realise it was there at all - apart from the fall at the end of the samba it was barely noticeable in any of her routines. Truth be told - she's actually a better dancer than John & Billy Ray, and probably shouldn't have gone until after them.

But - she isn't a "star" in her own right (on either side of the Atlantic), and I and a lot of others were a bit confused by her inclusion in the programme.

That said - we can't talk too loudly as our own Strictly come Dancing features "Celebrities" we've never heard of either......... :D :D

Absolutely - she's a typical celeb, not famous for any talent but for who she's had relationships with.

Yeah, but generally they actually have a job / profession, other than "being a celebrity" - such as actor / news presenter / sportsperson.

I think this is turning into a Heatherbashing.
I don't get what people's problem is? She was well known for her work campaigning against Land Mines for years before she became involved with McCartney- I had certainly heard of her. This whole thing of her only being famous because of her marriage is bogus, not everybody knew who she was but she wasn't some obscure social climber. I think tabloid journalism and opinion collumns have a lot to answer for.

It's none of our business who anyone marries or why it fails. This is completely unfair, she's been turned into some kind of hate figure for no apparent reason, she might have a 'strong' personality, but if you were trying to carry on your life and not fall into the 'handicap trap' it's a neccessity to have a thick skin.

Let's give this a rest-we don't know her personally so there is no grounds to make any judgements.

Let's try to have a sense of fair play.
