Dealing with a non-communicative dress vendor (who also has your money)

What does your contract say about fabric choice or extent of satin finishing? Because that would seem to be something that should have been specified. Those hems ARE finished (just not maybe the way he wanted), but that fabric does not look like something worth $500 and the fit seems wrong.

Can't he wear the off the rack shirt that you mentioned, that looks great? Or may he can buy something else off the rack from another vendor? Or can he wear something he already owns?

I'm not sure how important it is for the lead to look epic. I tend to think most of the focus is on the ladies attire.

I generally agree, though I also like complementing what my partner is wearing when possible so that it's visually obvious we are competing as a couple. At least one judge I've spoken with prefers it when he/she is judging big comps like Blackpool, probably much less necessary if there won't be 20+ couples on the floor at once. I'd still definitely vote great, generic off the rack shirt over mediocre complementary one though.
 
I am definitely not an expert in men's fashions. I am generally not a fan of flamboyant men's costumes that may or may not match the ladies. Subtle accents and or colors that are complimentary, maybe a pick up color in the shirt or tie, are fine.

Generally agree. Although if the lady's dress is LOUD, it's not totally crazy for the guy's to be just loud.

I love my current shirt and the subtlety of it. Her dress is three colors, mostly two of them and mine has all three as well, but mostly the third on a base black shirt. Love how together they look like a complete picture!

Out of respect for the designer, I'm going to decline for now, unfortunately, as all I have access to are the design sketches (dress is being fixed due to a measurement swap which happened to my partner and another lady at our studio ordering from the same designer). But once we have comp pictures, I'll share some (after badly editing them to make faces concealed, probably).
 
He'd wanted a generic-ish white shirt to trade in and out with his black shirt. He's been searching for years to find a designer who is good with 1) his particular shape (he's 5'7 and stocky, so @MissSilly not Mirko! :rofl:) and 2) actual business doings - he's emailed a number of designers who never followed through with returning multiple emails or even phone calls. So this particular designer already fit criteria #1 and so having previously dealt with her AND having friends who spoke positively about her custom design experience, we felt we were in good hands. #NOPE.

So. He does have something to wear for our upcoming event, but we were looking forward to having a new look for this fall and winter, and seeing as how we began the process in March 2016 for September 2016 wear date we're annoyed. We're also aware how ridiculous this annoyance is etc etc. :)

As a fellow dwarf (5'7" and broad here as well), I can relate to your partner's struggle!! Good hunting.

I had great luck with my shirt from Designs by Kalina - fit almost perfectly* on the first try and they designed a great cut for my body.

*I'm fairly confident that if they had measured me it would have fit perfectly, mailed in measurements my coach took and the only alterations were shortening the sleeves and taking the cuffs in a bit.
