Disappearing Dance Instructor

I agree, and I have to say that it is simplistic to assume that even with not the very first dance teacher. What if you're already working with the best person in your area and you are not one of those individuals living in big metro areas with big dance scene? Your options will be very limited.

I can't claim my instructor was the best in the area, especially with the bias on competing I see on DF boards (she did not compete, but she was a very good teacher, at least for me) but I wholeheartedly agree on the limited options part. I am going to try a few other teachers at other studios, but that would require me to switch genres, from AS to IS, and I am not exactly sold on that idea yet.

Guided study of one might not be a bad basis for continuing independent or less formalized study of the other, but if its not the dancing you want to do then that's a good reason for not doing it.

Lol, TD, I'll do that as soon as the outsourcing trend is reversed and IT jobs come back to North America--I haven't done engineering for a looong time since I kinda fell into IT back in the day...

hahaha fiiine!! but feel free to gve a ring if you ever want ur resume submitted down here! ;)

...lots of AS studios around here, including yours truly's ... just to add fuel to the fire ;)... not to mention its hard to be engaged to someone in a different country! hahaha

but BOT, congratulations Kits! Hope you find yourself the quality of dance education you are looking for! :)

Thanks TinyDancer

So far its going all right. We did a little Salsa performanc in front of the studio this pass friday. It went really well regarding the fact we ad lib the whole thing. Still had lots of fun.

I really miss my former instructor though. Studio parties are deffinately not the same at all. I am only lucky enough to dance with my new instructor to at least one dance at party. My old instrutor always insisted me to track him down and dance with him more to at least 4 or 5 songs. I dont know if I should just jump in and get him or what. Sometimes I just want to sit on the dance floor and wait for someone to take me up and dance with them haha.

Glad to hear things are working out for you Kits.

I have way too much experience with this. The studio I started with had the policy Larinda mentioned, where departing teachers were shoved out the door immediately when they gave notice. After losing 3 teachers that way in less than 6 months, I couldn't deal with it anymore. Now I'm with one of the teachers who left as an independent, along with another independent teacher. This is a major advantage to using an independent teacher vs a studio.

I haven’t had a “disappearing” dance instructor yet, but my regular Wednesday group instructor (who I’ve taken for 6 weeks straight) will be away for the next two weeks. So, he disappeared, but only temporarily. Argh! Just when I started his Intermediate class and was starting to get the hang of it, this guy disappears for a short while. They showed the substitutes on the schedule. Now, I’m in a spot to decide which substitute to take. It’s a hard decision.

You never know. ;)

I’ll just go on Wednesday like I normally do and take that substitute. She’s my private instructor and since I only had her on privates, I don’t know how she is with groups. This will be my first time in her group class. But I’m sure it’ll be fine. I was thinking of taking the substitute on Saturday since I’ve taken him before and know how good he is, but I decided to stick with the Wednesday class instead.

I wish I knew where he went..ah well if its fate I'll see him again. I just still miss him.

I'm glad to have this thread to refer back to because last night when I went to my studio for a lesson, I found out that my teacher who I've had when I started to learn ballroom dancing has left. Just like that, no warning at all. I cried all the way home, like I'm going through a grieving process and I feel disoriented. He was a great instructor, very professional and I learned so much from him. No romantic attachment because I am happily married but it was still a blow. Dance teachers enrich your life so much that it's very hard to let them go. The older I get, the more I hate change but it is reality. I wish him all the best.

Sorry to hear about your loss, bd44, but very glad that you had this thread. I hope the best for you in your transition to a new instructor.

Thank you CANI for your thoughts. It's nice to hear from others that this has happened to. Dance teachers can really have a positive impact on their students so it is hard when you are not able to work with them anymore. But change can be good too!
