Yes, I realize that people seemed to be responding to the title of the post, rather than the question I actually asked, i.e. "This brings me to the question: do followers have a more expansive understanding of tango than leaders do?" In the explanation before that, I tried to give exactly the context that I was interested in.
What precludes you from trying to follow different capable leaders, and getting the first-hand answers to your questions?
There are lots of things in tango that are hard, sometimes impossible, to explain verbally, one has to feel them in one's own body to understand.
I have learned to follow, but it's not what I want to do at milongas, and certainly not to the extend that most followers do, that is, all the time, for years and years.

To me the question is a little like "Do gatherers have a more expansive understanding of nature than hunters?" So, in absence of clear definitions of so many things, and no real ways of measurement... Some of them, of certain aspects of it, at times, perhaps

Hmmm....
Yes, obviously, followers will encounters a multitude of leaders. And yes, because the leader has more say in determining the style for the dance, that means followers will encounter a wider range of styles - will have more variety-experience - than leaders. So they'll get a wide range of experience. Width, basically.
But leaders, conversely, will have more experience of using their own style with a wide range of followers. So leaders will get depth.
Comparing the two, and trying to say one is "more" than the other, doesn't apply - ultimately we both have exactly the same number of dances, and exactly the same opportunities to learn.
