Do you prefer live or memorex?

Ok, maybe most of you are too young to remember that...but my question is does dancing in front of a live band increase the salsa "experience" for you or not? Also does it make a difference if the band is big time or just a cover band?

For me a live band definitely adds to the atmosphere....after I'd been salsa dancing about 6 months, a friend of mine who is from Mexico said, "you have to come with me saturday night, there is this salsa band and they are great". Anyway I go with him. It's at another local latino club. They have a great floor and it is huge, but we don't usually go there because the music sucks. We asked them to play a salsa one night and the DJ plays cumbia...we go there for a "salsa" contest once also and again all they play for the couples dancing is cubmia.

Anyway, we go to the club and when the salsa band comes on, everyone goes crazy, I'm thinking like, whats the big deal thinking they were just a cover band. Then they start playing all these songs I'd been dancing to for the last 6 months. It was incredible, first No le Pegue a la Negra, then La Negra No Quiere, after that Cali Pachanguero and Han Cogido La Cosa. If you haven't guessed it, the group was Grupo Niche. I had no idea who that was or even that the same group played all those songs, but it was soooo awesome. I figured out pretty quick that there were someone famous by the way the dancers were going wild to every song they played. I found out later that someone rich had brought them in for his daughter's wedding and they were just playing at this club because the were already in town.

It was definitely what cemented my salsa addiction :D . There is no going back now. Do salsa bands generally play where people can dance or do they normally do more traditional concerts?

It makes a difference but to me it doesn't make a difference if the band is a "big" or "small" one. Some bands jive with what I like and some don't. If a band does on a particular night it definitely is better than listening to canned music that I like to dance to.

That's a cool story, CByB!
I love live music, but I've seen some bands(NOT Grupo Niche!) who just didn't have it together. The sound wasn't good, the singer was waiiling off key(alcohol?), etc.
Going to see a buddy sing in HIS salsa band on the 19th. Their old band had a lousy female voaclist, but this guy should be better. At least Spanish is his mother tongue...

If the band is good, I'll take the live music over a DJ any day. It just adds another element for me to feed off of. But a bad band is a horrible thing!

definitely live band!!! It makes a tremendous difference in energy and usually adds to the intensity of my dance experience
in my neck of the woods you can find one almost every night of the week for $10 or less, and most times with multiple options of venues thank goodness!
I also like clubs that have the DJ play in between sets, gives me time to "cool off" :D

live band stuff

I like the live band, not because it makes any difference in my hearing the music, but when I take a break it is something visual to look at...

There's no denying that live band give a special energy to the dancing, so I'd go for live music.

But only, ONLY, if they remember that they're playing for dancers. Cause when 15 minute salsas begin comming in a row... I don't really want to leave someone in the midle of a song... so please try to take care of the music lenghts!

Amen to that. The best dancing experiences I've ever had were to a live band in a cozy setting where the musicians fed off of the energy of the dancers and vice versa. But I've been to a bunch of places where the band was doing a latin jazz jam for their own enjoyment, and that sucks. A fifteen-minute song is too much of a good thing no matter how popular the song (theme) is. After five minutes you run out of moves that fit that kind of music, and start getting bored to death. And these mega-songs usually have no grand structure, they become one dull and homogeneous mass of incessant clave and repeating themes from beginning to end, there are no breaks to hit, no crescendo to anticipate as the end nears, no tricky twists that allow you to be playful. There are good and bad bands for dancing, and I'll take my iPod over a bad band any day.

I agree -- dancing to a GOOD live band is fantastic, but I also have a lot of respect for good DJs for their skill in reading the floor and working the crowd, and often a bad live band is even worse than a mediocre DJ.

I have yet to really experience dancing with a live band playing. I'm anxious to do so!!

Oscar de Leon and Jose "El Canario" Alberto are playing this Friday night. Doesn't get better than that! There's information here.

Unfortunately, I'm going to a friend's birthday party that night so I'll be skipping it.
