Ok, maybe most of you are too young to remember that...but my question is does dancing in front of a live band increase the salsa "experience" for you or not? Also does it make a difference if the band is big time or just a cover band?
For me a live band definitely adds to the atmosphere....after I'd been salsa dancing about 6 months, a friend of mine who is from Mexico said, "you have to come with me saturday night, there is this salsa band and they are great". Anyway I go with him. It's at another local latino club. They have a great floor and it is huge, but we don't usually go there because the music sucks. We asked them to play a salsa one night and the DJ plays cumbia...we go there for a "salsa" contest once also and again all they play for the couples dancing is cubmia.
Anyway, we go to the club and when the salsa band comes on, everyone goes crazy, I'm thinking like, whats the big deal thinking they were just a cover band. Then they start playing all these songs I'd been dancing to for the last 6 months. It was incredible, first No le Pegue a la Negra, then La Negra No Quiere, after that Cali Pachanguero and Han Cogido La Cosa. If you haven't guessed it, the group was Grupo Niche. I had no idea who that was or even that the same group played all those songs, but it was soooo awesome. I figured out pretty quick that there were someone famous by the way the dancers were going wild to every song they played. I found out later that someone rich had brought them in for his daughter's wedding and they were just playing at this club because the were already in town.
It was definitely what cemented my salsa addiction
. There is no going back now. Do salsa bands generally play where people can dance or do they normally do more traditional concerts?
