Does Anybody Else Have This Problem?

Hi,

My partner has a problem dancing in the morning. Whenever we have to dance in the morning at competitions, we do very poorly. My partner cannot get into the mood for dancing. His mind and body just does not function properly for dancing in the morning. Does anybody else have a problem like this? Is there anyhting he can do about this problem?

Maybe you should get up earlier and warm up a bit more?? People usually take a couple of hours in the morning to "get in the mood" (those who are early birds are exceptions) for anything (work, dance, school..etc).

Add a weekly morning practice session. If that's not possible, suggest to your partner that he should do morning workout sessions or something to get his body used to the idea that it will have to do physically demanding activities in the morning.

I have the same problem. I'm just not a morning person at all.

When I have to dance in the morning, I try to go to sleep extra early and wake up extra early. I give myself several extra hours to get in some good stretching, a nice breakfast, and a cup of coffee. This way, by the time I dance, it's also many hours from when I woke up. I also make sure to warm up even more than usual, first alone and then with my partner.

Getting up extra early is painful, since like I said I'm not a morning person. But once I get over the hurdle of the first hour, it does a lot of good to have taken the time to ease into the dancing.

I have the opposite problem...I am ready to go in the morning...and its not even a physical thing at night, but my concentration is usually shot......I hate even taking a lesson after 7pm....physically, I can go for hours more but not with focus

While I am generally ready to go at comps, on occassion it happens that I am just really not 'with it' - regardless of the time of day...

What I usually do then is a combination of the following:

1.) go to the ballroom and watch others dance to get in the mood
2.) mentally replay some of my favorite dancing videos with favorite dancers
3.) listen to favorite music and get in the mood (always have good music with me)
4.) warm up / practice - either by myself or my partner
5.) start getting ready - hair etc. and focus on the dancing
6.) visualize dancing really well and winning - I usually do this while listening to music

If mental readiness is there but the physical isn't, I would suggest warming up hard before you dance - to the point where you sweat - to get your body ready

I read in an interview with Dimitri Timokhin and Anna Bezikhova where they say that with the constant travel they do in the different time zones they always have to be ready. They said they practice so much that even on days when they are not really 'with it' their dancing is still pretty good. So I guess plenty of training should prepare your body to do well even if you don't want to be there :-).

i'll be dancing very early for my first comp and am a serious night owl, so i 'm reading this with interest.

if i have to be on deck at 9, i suppose i would wake up at 6 just to do hair and makeup and eat, let ALONE rehearse. oy.

We are planning to leave NY for Constitution the day of the comp.. That should be fun, hair 3 am, makup 4 am... grrr

hair and makeup at 3/4 am doesn't sound that out of place......
it's quite common, especially at large pro/am competitions, for competitors to schedule their hair/makeup appointments at that time of the day just because the stylists are in such a high demand......
That's why I do my own hair and makeups ALL THE TIME! <I think I did a decent job! >

but I guess, it's slightly different in your case when you are forced to get up so early......good luck

Oh....you are lucky that you ONLY need to be on deck at 9 at your first competiton......
I remember my heat started at 8:30am at my first competition, and yes, the first heat started at about 7:45ish am!

This is why I know some teachers who will not compete pro/am with anyone in bronze......
