Dreams and dream stories

Hi everybody,

While reading thru the Pitfalls of Dancing my mind wondered of from work to dancing again. And I couldn't help dreaming of finishing my education, take a parttime job and being able to dance as often as I want...

Right now I have still 1.5 years of collagein front of me, but after that I really want to take my dancing to the next level. Makeing some money out of teaching, doing shows and giving workshops and so financing more better (expensive) trainers and going to comps abroad.

What do you see yourself doing, if you could do exactly what you want? Or do you allready have the life you want regarding dancing?

It really depends on my partner, but I plan on taking my dancing as far as humanly possible. The idea of training full-time and competing internationally really appeals to me.

Let's say your partner totally goes with your plans (dreams). Do you see yourself turning pro, or starting a dance club travel the world doing shows, or comps?

If she does, then yes, Pro competitor and shows, like Burn the Floor or such is definately my end goal. I love it all, and want to do as much with the world of dance as possible.

As a side note, I also hope to become as active in the "make dance an olympic sport" movement and general promotion of it as a spectator sport. It's not quite at the level of public awareness yet I think it deserves.

*day dreams*

I would love to have the time and money to do a significant amount of dancing every day. I want to take Ballet, Jazz, Modern, HipHop Belly dancing, Ballroom, WCS (*swoon*)... Right now the above classes are only available on weekdays, and since I work 40hrs on top of highschool (While trying to maintain a 3.93 GPA) weekdays arent an option. The work pays for the 12 competitions a year I try to make it to... (because I live in an area where traveling to comps is my only option really.) Thats now.
When I go to college next year, Im afraid I wont be able to dance as much, for pure lack of money, and time. *faints in fear*

Maybe I can teach WCS at a dance studio in exchange for all the other groups they offer? Anyone heard of that? I think I can also do ballet etc. through the PE dept. at my college. Unfortunately I dont think my college has a collegiate ballroom team, that'd be fun to do. I havent ever done much ballroom, just WCS...

But when I reapear in the dance circuit in 4 years, Id love to be able to keep up my travel schedule. I want to take my dancing as far as it can go. The fact that I started at 14ish makes that possibility slightly tangeable in the WCS world. I deffinitly plan on one day competing at the All-star level, I would love to do Champions, but I dont know if thats a realistic goal. I KNOW I can make it to Allstars.

But overall, I just love dancing. Anything that lets me dance more often, thats what I want to do. Competing at a proffesional level, and being payed to attend conventions seems like the way to get the most dancing in. But then again, I dont want dancing to turn into a job. Having heard so many pros say that it is a job for them, that makes me shudder in fear. I dont want it to loose its magic!

Or at least someone with all those things who you get along with as good friends. I want to be able to laugh with my partner...I'd never be able to survive if I couldn't.

I would like to take my dancing as far as I can, too. To become good enough that to compete internationally isn't a waste of money. And I would like to compete more.

And another thing, if I could turn pro, I would. But I think I am too old for that.

I am very lucky right now to have the time to devote to dancing. I spent many years on the corporate ladder and am grateful that the last two years have been about reconnecting to my love of dance. I dance ballet, modern, latin and smooth.

I dance pro-am and am lucky enough to have three pro teachers that are current competitiors who are highly ranked in each of their respective styles.

This upcoming year, I am going to get to follow my dreams. I will begin competing at the bigger comps in the open gold divisions and see where it takes me. I love competitive dancing because it gives me an arena to stretch to achieve all that I can in the art of these dances AND hopefully to share the joy and beauty of what I've learned with others. Sure winning is great, but as they say - it's really the journey (at least for me - in dancer's years, I'm too old to have aggressive competitive goals).

Dancing makes me happy....actually happy seems to be too small a word to contain the feeling....let's try, joyous. In that, I'm already a winner....and that's what dreams are made of!

Unfortunately I dont think my college has a collegiate ballroom team

Most collegiate teams demand you to be a student or employee of the college, so if your hunt turns up empty at your college maybe consider looking for job at a nearby college, if one exists, with a collegiate team. It's well worth the experience at a very inexpensive cost.
Time will be the biggest challenge.

Maybe I can teach WCS at a dance studio in exchange for all the other groups they offer? Anyone heard of that?

I'm not a teacher, but I would be surprised if there were no studios that did that since I would assume they would want you in group classes so you'll be a better and more versatile teacher for them.

That aside, I've attended groups (including intermediate/advanced classes) free at places and without teaching, probably because of the lack of men. Usually they offered me, but the times I offered (worded tactfully) they accepted. Regardless, it cannot hurt to ask and you're offering to teach/help... worse case scenario they say 'no'. Just make sure their teacher/teaching is worth your time.

I have this setup at the studio I'm at right now. I'm teaching ballroom basics as opposed to WCS though.

Not the kind of dream you mean, but last night I dreamed that I went to a huge dance event--not a comp, more like a dance camp--and met sdsalsaguy. Woke up before I got a chance to dance with him.

My major waking dream is to dance until the day I die (on the dance floor would be good).
