Dressing for comp watching...

What does one wear for going to watch a comp? Will be there in the evening, presumably (dinner and later)...reportedly, dancing to be involved.

Dressy/casual? Little black dress? I'm lost here...

If you treated it like going to dinner at a decent resturaunt (modified in the details to suit any dancing you plan to do) you would not be out of place - but these days you'll probably see some people in jeans and T shirts too.

depends upon WHEN you are going...most of the time fri evening and especially saturday evening at most comps can be pretty dressy ...daytime, meh, whatever floats your boat....but even on dressy nights...that can range from nice pant suit to little black dress to formal...as for shoes...I always wear a danceable shoe...just in case there's general dancing and there often is

So...little black (cocktail) dress, which can easily be dressed up or down with accessories, should be appropriate?

And, of course, a wrap. (Thank you thank you thank you, Fascination, for that tip. I'm always freezing.)

I'll add that most everyone seems to add some of their own flair to whatever they're wearing. Even if it's jeans, there's something special about it all. Extra bling, fab sunglasses, big necklace, rocking shoes, whatever.

Lately, I have not seen much in the way of black tie on a Sat. night with the exception of the judges and some of the people sponsoring events. It seems even Black Tie has gotten more relaxed.

I never wear dance shoes to watch events. I just never dance at these things and I don't find them comfortable to stand in for hours at a time.

can't emphasize the "bring something warm" comment enough. in the summer, ballrooms are over-air-conditioned to the point of pain (for spectators.) it's RIDICULOUS. this weekend at Manhattan i'll likely bring a full change of very warm clothing - i'll come in in something sexy, stand around and show off for a while, then give up and change in time for the events i really want to focus on. if i don't, i'll be too cold to see straight.

And judges too - they are often standing under the A/C events.

But the justification is that it's for the competitors currently dancing, which is a good reason (though it may be overdone at times). Everyone else can put on extra layers - the competitors in some cases certainly can't wear any less!

Right...note to self...

Forget black wrap, break out black fur (hand-me-down! I didn't kill it! It was dead long before I was born!) shrug.

What's the deal with the standing? Supposedly, the group has got a table reserved. Will I still be standing?

it's much easier to see something you're very interested in if you stand, unless you are lucky enough to have a courtside seat. the seating isn't slanted - the floor is on the same level as the tables around the floor - so most *seated* views are partially obstructed.

if it's crowded, however, many people never get a seat, they stand the whole time. it varies widely from comp to comp and night to night.

I totally agree with bringing something warm! Besides the fact the the ballroom is kept very cold for the dancers, I was sitting front row at Millennium and during pro standard a cold breeze came every time the dancers passed me.
