Dudes, help a beginner out. (Urgent!)

I know you guys get these "Please teach me to dance...." requests all the time, but please hear me out.

I've just started going out to clubs, and I like it a lot. Seems I'm popular with the ladies, as many send me "invitations" to dance with them. But I can't join them because I'm afraid of making a fool of myself. I can't dance at all, since I've never bothered to learn.

The only good thing here is that I know I'm not one of those people with two left feet; all I need is a general idea of what to do, and I can just put my own style in it from there.

So what's a really basic step/movement/whatever for clubbing? The clubs I hang out at usually play hip hop, funk, and techno/fast/weird stuff. I notice most people just seem to step right then left, right then left...but I don't know. What is this?

Thanks!

Hi monos. Welcome. 8) I plead exhaustion -- it's the middle of the night (4:40 AM) and I need sleep to be able to help. But honest, I'll post something later today. There's definitely help available.

Welcome.

Jenn :D

Invitation to dance in clubs :?:

First time i here about it, I don't know mybe where you live its like this, when you dance to, say trance, you need to feel the music, let it flow in your blood, and start moving your body in accordance, its not a couple dance, the most you can do is dance close to her and get horny with her, again, not much of a dance...

If you want to move better, here are some ideas: practice at home with music full on, or, take dance lesson, like salsa, mybe you wont hear salsa music in the clubs(only in latin/salsa clubs), but it will improve you coordinance, and will help you feel th beat.

Sorry, I said it wrong. What I meant was that, say, I'll be standing somewhere near where people are dancing, and hot girls will dance over and try to flirt to get me to dance with them.

I'm not going to miss the next opportunity!

Now techno/trance, I might get murdered for this but... Here it goes...

All you have to do is jump around, go with the loud bangs, or any other constant sound, or just a sound that sticks to you. Stay with that and you can fall down and look like you are dancing well. Almost anything goes with this type of club dance. Even the 2 left feet can look like they can dance with techno/trance. Just do what feels right to you. I call it the escape for the non dancer to think they can dance. AHHHHHH say what... But hey, if you like it, you like man.

Stand there see what the music feels like then let your body go. Chances are that as a beginner you will look as good as someone dancing it for a long time. Must admit, that I am biased towards techno/trance and anything that sounds like it. My idea of dancing doesn't match anything that this new age in music offers, hopefully we can convience you and you can takes ome salsa classes then you can ask those hotties out to some salsa. :D Now we are talking...

In all, I suggest you read the link above, you can even apply that to techno as well. Then just let the music get inside of you and do anything you want, no matter what it is, in a techno club it will go like a nail to finger. Even falling flat on your butt.

Yep, that's the right one Boriken! It seems to have worked for our young friends too, so it can't be that far off base, right?

And oh yeah, welcome to the forums mono! :D

Thanks. The advice in the thread is extrememly helpful, even though I have no intention of "grinding" just yet. The website mentioned ("bustamove.com") has most of the moves I see people doing. I'll look into that too; I like the beginner steps and the spins for now.

Come to think of it, even though I've been to a few techno-type places, I can't really recall exactly how most people were dancing. I guess everyone really was doing their own "weird" thing and jumping around.

I'm already practicing the hip-hop stuff in my room, and it doesn't seem so bad. I'm sure I'll able to hold my own after a couple days' practice. It's good to know there isn't much to techno dancing; I can just adapt what I'm learning now and do whatever feels good.

Thanks guys. Keep suggestions coming if you have something to share.

To techno...I actually do a "meringue" type of step (instead of hopping up and down)...then there is the whole glide thing that is too difficult to try and explain. It has to do with weight shifting though.

True lovers of techno (I must admit...I am one 8) ) actually do have certain styles and techniques. You can't watch a good techno dancer without being impressed (my reaction is normally, "how in the heck did he do that????"). If you see the morons with the glow sticks or the ones that are actually somehow booty dancing...that is NOT techno dancing. Those people are just posers...
