Dance Dance Revolution, meet Ballroom. It's finally happened... They've created a ballroom dance video game...

I guess it was only a matter of time, since it seems they just *have* to create a video game for everything these days, but...ballroom?

When I first saw it, I thought "perhaps it'll teach at least some basics or something," but no.. It's all done via a handheld controller (and a dance pad for one platform) and apparently you have to press the right sequence at the right time to progress.

Daughter: "Mama mama, I wanna ballroom dance!"
Mama: "Ok, dear." (buys DWTS: TVG)
Daughter: (spends next 6 months in room pressing buttons on keypad instead of dancing for real)

...

Haha, ok I've played this game, Wii version with remotes. My boss actually bought it for our studio, just something to do for fun. I think the PS2 version has a dance pad, which would be better than waving your arms around the whole time.

The game overall is entertaining, but it gets frustrating when you realize you have to hit buttons on the remote to match the arrows on the screen and if you're "off" you score low with the judges. The problem is, the arrows don't always match up with the rhythm of the song, so when you think you're playing it right, you're actually concentrating really hard to hit the dang arrows!

The only dance thing you may do in the game are the special patterns where you get extra points for doing the "mashed potatoes", "hand jive", "maracas", "locomotion", "twist", and so on.

The music is good and the choreography is fun to watch (like you're even paying attention when you're trying to get through the sequence of arrows).

Carrie looks like she does on the show, Len looks like he got a face lift, and Bruno, well I'll just say he looks really crabby.

Sister got it and said while it was obviously nothing raelly dance related itself, was fun if you just looked at it as what it is, a game, particularly with the familiar names/faces we all know.

I was really hoping it would be a table-top game, where you could roll a little D-20 all encrusted in Swarovski.

"the arrows don't always match up with the rhythm of the song"

HA! Just like the performances on the show!

What do you think?
Thanks for posting this - I would have fallen more behind the times if you hadn't . . . !

Just speaking for myself - I don't get it - that doesn't mean I don't like it, it just means that games haven't been my bag.

I was fascinated by the graphics and what was done though - there are seemingly endless possibilities with graphics, games - and the 3D stuff coming out is unbelievable.

Thanks for this insight into what's going on . . . .!
