Easier to follow when you don't know the dance?

I have recently discovered one thing, and am curious if anyone else has the same feeling or experience?

I found myself doing a way better job as a follower when I don't know that dance or just learned the dance. When I dance with guys in dances that I haven't learned (or only know a bit), i tend to follow well, and do lots of moves/turns that I didn't know previously. When I am out dancing in dances I am good at, sometimes, I don't follow as well.

Also, I discover that I am having more fun when a guy takes me out on a dance i don't know, and just leads me through all the steps.
I don't know why though, but this is how I feel.

Anyone has the same experiences?

Yep. I know all the ballroom dances, but when I dance with someone I don't know, I'm on my best behavior because I don't know what they're going to do! The more I dance with someone, the more complacent I get and I stop following. I've been going to the country dances lately and learning some two step by following, and it's going the same way.

Yes...when I follow well then doing a new dance with a good leader is a great experience. I like to close my eyes as well. If I know the dance I tend to analyze it a lot and get distracted from following, since I usually know the danec from a leader's perspective.

I guess I'm the type that has to know what she is doing 'cause I just can't enjoy dancing when I really don't know what I'm doing. Following blindly just isn't for me :| - I guess I'm not all that confident in my "follow" blindly abilities.....

I have my moments where I try to pick the steps that I am being led through. Those are the times that I usually get caught out when the lead cuts the step off early or I start to second guess the lead and think something is being led that isn't. Also when I have been working on a couple of new steps I tend to look out for them and think that every lead is taking me into the new step.

Just need to learn to switch off more I think ...... 8)

Hopefully there will be extra leaders tonight at the zydeco lesson tonight and so I can follow. Lead part is really easy in zydeco, so I have no qualms about doing that!

A comment from a leader here. I have found that some beginner followers are easier to lead than other more experienced ones. It's as if they are open to suggestion, where the more experienced girls are saying 'hang on, I don't know that one'. This makes it more fun for me as a leader, and I imagine it makes it fun for the follower too. I know I sometimes feel imprisoned by the moves that I know, whereas I need to feel liberated to have fun
