Help. Im supposed to be writing a paper due last week on emerson and thoreau and i keep browsing DF instead ahhhhh.. darn im going to fail american lit, and im not even joking.
ummm... Anyone know anything about transcendentalists? please?

All I can tell you is that Thoreau is about 4 blocks from my house and Emerson is off of Thoreau! Ugh! Whitman is somewhere in the vicinity, too.

I did go to Walden Pond a few years ago, though, and saw where Thoreau once had a shack. That's about as much as I can contribute. My brother, the English major, would be much more help to you :)

Good luck!

Contact Genesius Redux on these forums. You'll probably have to e-mail him but he will probably be able to help you. His real first name is Mark.

Thoreau's essay on civil disobedience inspired both Gandhi and Martin Luther King's non-violent approach to direct action. Given your signature that seems like something that maybe you should be interested in, although I'm not sure you would be.

Also, Emerson drew from Indian (as in Hinduism, etc.) ideas of some sort of oversoul in which all individuals participate, and his ideas resonated with people experimenting with psychedelics in the 60s.

This is my heavy-handed attempt to make you interested, but both thinkers are actually pretty counter-cultural. (Personally I find it hard to take Emerson seriously as a philosopher, but as the author of a series of linked, often provocative and memorable, epigrams, woven into what look like essays, he's pretty good.)

Thnx guys =p
dance poet: I have googled, alot, but i didnt really find anything interesting. Im bad at googling =( it doesnt seem like that should be possible, but i can never find what im looking for.

I had a long talk with my teacher, and she said to just put in some quotes to the version i already have an add transitions. That i can do.

Check out your local book sellar for "Cliff's Notes."

Cliff was a wonderful man that helped many a people with term papers, book reports, test preparations...

Cliff rocks! :rocker:

Amen to that!  It helps if you use it as a study guide, though, unlike many of my friends, who used them as a reading substitute. What my friends didn't realize is that teachers are so onto the Cliff Notes trick that they always ask questions that are impossible to answer without actual study being involved.  It's pretty hard to write an in-depth compare and contrast type essay question answer without having read the book(s) involved. :x

monarch notes are superior to cliff notes in terms of critical analysis, but this presumes that you actually want to learn something vs. merely getting the work done and not really caring about the grade.
