Empire Gala social dancing time vs shows and other activities ( Empire Dance championship)

Have a question for anyone who attended this event previously. Was it a lot of social dancing time or mostly shows, awards, promotions and talking? It starts at 6.30, ends at 11. So how much time for real dancing for attendees out of this time? Considering going if sufficient dance time. Your insight based on previous experience with this event is appreciated

It looks that forumers did not attend this Gala previously. I wanted to attend it with my dance teacher , but if it is a big Unknown, no replies, it will be risky money spending.

Last year Vibeke Toft & Allan Tornsberg had their amateur students put on a show. Typically they do it every year, but this year I don't think they are going to as last year it was really a last minute production. There's also some drama going on between the organizers...

I went 2 years ago, and between the shows and other events there was very little social dancing. It was really more a spectator event, and most of the social dancing was either before everything started, while people were eating, or as people started to head out.

Bumping this 4yo thread because I have similar questions, having never attended a dinner dance at a comp. Empire is calling it their “30 Year Anniversary Gala,” and their website says doors open at 6, dinner is at 7, and - I quote - “There will be at least 4 hours of social dancing!” (Exclamation point is theirs, not mine.)
  1. What does one wear to something like this??? Long dress, short dress, presumably something you can dance in…? How dressy is acceptable? How casual is acceptable? Please feel free to post pics of any dresses you think would be appropriate! I honestly have no idea.
  2. Does one wear (or bring) dance shoes to the dinner; and if so, which style? I usually wear Latin sandals to socials, but they wouldn’t look right with a cocktail dress. But I don’t like to dance rhythm dances in smooth shoes.
  3. If one has been dancing smooth heats during the daytime session earlier that day, is it OK to leave the comp hair & makeup in place for the dinner too; or would it be better to wash off the top few layers so that one does not look like a Tammy Faye Bakker impersonator?
  4. At what time should one consume a 5-hr energy drink, if one’s normal bedtime is 8:30-9:00pm? (This question is intended as a joke. Well, not really. I mean - I do go to bed that early, since I wake up around 3:30am. But my past history shows that a 5-hr energy drink gets me reeeeealllly wired for a lot longer than 5 hours. Will be an interesting experiment to see how many cocktails it takes to balance out the effects of the energy drink. I might ask my pro to take notes to document this experiment. Or videos. [THAT IS DEFINITELY A JOKE, PEOPLE.])
  5. What else should one consider in planning to attend this event?

P.S. This morning’s questions are brought to you by Overthinkers-R-Us, a subsidiary of Overthinkers of the World, Unite.

1. It's somewhat event dependent: spiffy "cocktail" at some, more formal at others. That's not very helpful, is it?
2. I happen to have a pair of black dance shoes that look more like normal shoes and that's what I wear. The dancing is USUALLY pretty low key, and I think most women don't wear actual dance shoes. Also not very helpful.
3. This one I can answer: get out as much of the competition hair as you can. Mine is much easier to deal with than yours and I always undo competition hair and makeup completely.

Enjoy!

You can get out of the comp hair and make up (unless you need to keep the hair for the next day). These events generally feel like a slightly dressier social dance event. like a valentine's day or new year's day dance. But they're not going to turn you away for being too dressy or not dressy enough, so don't sweat it too much. People wear a range of stuff. One might look out of place in ripped jeans and rocker shirt, but I have seen it... If you plan to dance (or wish to be asked to dance), wear something you can dance in and have dance shoes on (sorry if I'm stating the obvious).

It's possible I will wear jeans (not ripped) with my black, dressy Latin sandals (or the gold one) and a sparkly Missoni top or black silk turtleneck. I definitely won't be wearing an evening gown. Maybe I will decide on a skirt or a simple silk dress, I don't know, but I definitely won't be wearing an evening gown. Which is not to say I don't admire those who do!
