and, on the flip side, what are steps that you take which increase the likelihood of successful dancing?...this can be mental or or otherwise and can include what you do to ensure successful lessons or comps

Letting go of expectations. This could have as easily gone in the other thread, but in generally, I think that's the #1 thing I can do to increase my likelihood of successful dancing. I'm certainly not perfect, but I think I'm getting better at it.

On a more trivial but not entirely unrelated note, I find that having a sticking to a routine helps. Part of that routine has to be a good, solid warm-up. In general, I've been talking about comps here; I suppose that one applies to lessons as well.

Thinking about my routines/technique when I'm off the comp or practice floor. It give the muscles a rest, but keeps the brain active.

Also listening to music that isn't dance related has helped keeping dance stress levels low :P

As much as possible, sweat it out right before the comp, or even a lesson. Not only muscles work better when they're warm and relaxed, interestingly I found that a solid and and sufficiently tiring warm up has a calming effect, greatly reducing any last minute jitters.

^^^^ I coerced my partner to do a sh*t ton of burpees in the hotel hallway for this very reason. He dances sooooo much better after burning off that excess energy. I'm just fine though  haha

I am one of those people who has way too much energy (as has been noted in dance beat on at least one occasion)....I have to get some of the edge off...in general, the more I prepare to relax, the better off I happen to be...generally speaking, staying warm, and calm is the way that I get into a good space....also staying centered and keeping things in perspective.
