Well, there were some German orchestras who played Tango in the Argentine style with bandoneons and all. But, I think what you mean is like the Int. Ballroom Tango that is heavy on drums and accordions. Argentine Tango really has no drums.
Of course, in the thirties, Argentine Tango was extrememly popular in France. Gardel, Canaro, Demare, they all toured in France and made a lot of money there. I have heard different accounts of what the French really danced to it. I think it was probably something like the Apache, which was a dangerous and difficult dance that imitated a street fight. It was really not like Tango. This is what Valentino danced in the movie, not the Argentine Tango. He said so himself.
