Fabric shopping in NYC

Planning a trip to NYC to look for fabric for a gown, Looking for shading material.
Can anyone set me in the right direction as to where the fabric district is located and if it is do-able from Grand Central.

Thanks

Basically 36th or so to 39th primarily between 7th and 8th. You'd have to walk across town from grand central which is not too bad if the weather is decent and you aren't carrying too many finds. There's a cross town shuttle train but I think I've only ever taken it once.

I know that friends of mine have gone to Spandex House Inc on 38th... happy shopping! Let us know how it turns out

LOTS of dressmakers use spandex house, definitely worth seeing.

Wish I had taken pictures of the fabric mall (yes, full mall all of fabric merchants) in Kuwait. Was really cool

Great thanks for the help. Someone else told me most fabric stores are closed on week-ends, is this true?

Probably around half of them are open - and generally more with fabric are open than those that specialize in thread, edgings & notions. The closed on weekends ones also typically close around 6pm on weekdays.

Bring a bag that makes carrying a fair amount off weight and bulk comfortable... they give out fairly heavy plastic bags, but you probably want something with a shoulder strap if making a day of it.

I was there in May and did not walk from Grand Central. I took the subway and came out about a block away from the needle/button sculpure that starts the area. Then I walked part of my rear off in and out of stores packed to the rafters, but I had fun. I enjoyed checking out Mood Fabrics too because I'm a Project Runway freak. Next time I go back to NY it will be just for fabric shopping. I hope you enjoy your trip.

How I wish I could go to Spandex House. I've just been at their website, again, staring at the pictures and wondering how well the colours match...

(My daughter "needs" a new standard dress for January, since the dress code is relaxing enough to let the skirt mid-calf length. We get this when moving from Juvenile to Junior.)

Spandex House is on West 38th St. between 7th & 8th Avenues. It is closed on Sundays as are most of the fabric shops (M&J Trimming is open on Sundays). It's about 10-15 walk from Grand Central and I do recommend walking as the best way to see NY, but if you are not up to it, you can take the S from Grand Central one stop to Times Square, exit at 42nd & 7th and battle your way through the tourists down to 38th St. Have a great trip.

Is Grand Central your only option? Sounds like Spandex House would be a much shorter walk from Penn Station if you can use that.

If you take a "real" train in from the northeast you end up at Grand Central... obviously you can go down to the subway and pay a subway fare, though if it's a nice day and not carrying anything (at least on the way _to_ shopping) walking may be preferable.

It depends where you're traveling from...Amtrak and NJ transit trains arrive at Penn Station and I'm pretty sure they're "real" trains.

There are plenty of small trimming stores that their prices are cheaper than M&J Trimming's. Just walk around the area and you will see a lot of places. M&J's pricing are very high for a lot of items. ;)
