favorite comps....where, when, and why

Don't forget american vs international on your list of questions. Certain comps are definitely better for certain styles.

Thanks DancingMommy :) Those are some good questions to start off with. And I definitely know my answers to those.

Maybe I could change the topic of this thread (anyone know how to do that?) and ask DFers to list their favourite competitions, if it's Pro/Am, Am/Am, etc. and why?

Of course, everyone has different tastes but I think this would give new competitors a good inside look as to what some competitions offer (that's not listed on their website/blurb.

So, yeah, my input is Manhattan Dancesport because I've only been to two comps so what do I know lol...

As to which competitions are the "best"...

It REALLY depends on your goals as a dancer, your level, how far you want to travel, how much money you have to spend, etc etc.

I don't travel outside my area (Central Florida) because we've got plenty of decent competitions to choose from and cost is a major factor for us as well as time off from the kids.

Ask yourself the following and it will make it easier for people to guide/suggest comps you.

Will I be competing Pro/Am or Amateur?
What's my budget?
What is my schedule like?
What level will I be dancing at?
How far am I willing to go - realistically - distance-wise?
Where am I at mentally as far as competition goes? Do I need a smaller competition to get my feet wet or can I jump right in to a huge comp and be ok?
Do I want to enter multi-dance events or just one-dance events? What about showcases? Exhibitions?

Write those down on paper and date it. Answer the questions HONESTLY. Don't think about what you'd "like" to be able to do. Then put it in an envelope, seal it and save it. Talk about your answers with your coach. From there, then you'll be in a better position to make a decision.

Competitions are like Baskin Robbins. There's a flavor for everyone. You just have to know what *your* flavor is.

I believe capitol is the third weekend of august (I only know b/c my pro may be going and I can't due to a work conflict)which is a bummer b/c I have never done that one...but if you go to the Dancesport series superbowl site and click on events you will find it there...as to a favorites thread...we do have one...fwiw...thusfar for me, usdsc and heritage are favorites...I have also enjoyed hotlanta ...but I never met a comp I didn't love...

I dance pro am...I like heritage and usdsc because of the lacoation, amenities and level of competitors...ohio for the level of competition is unparalleld but not so much into ohio in november...still, wouldn't miss it...hotlanta is a large number of entries and I love atlanta

Ha, that's for sure. And did math yesterday and realized with what I've spent/will spend on spectating this year (considering 3 of comps required travel), could have added another competition or two to my own list. Happy I could go cheer on friends though.

Thanks, fasc, I found all the info I need and more about Capital at the site you gave. I have not able to achieve this at any other site except here. Power of free flow of information!

USDC and Ohio are probably two of, if not the, highest levels of competition in this country. For comp as a whole. might be occasional ones that are as high or higher in specific style elsewhere, but for compe as a whole,t hsoe are definitely two of best in country.

ohio tends to have more entries...both are very high quality...the big two in my book...though there are others that could be argued for

My opinion for pro-am international latin:

My must do comps for level of competition/titles - USDC and Ohio Star Ball

The big comps the finalists in my division may show up for - Emerald, Millennium, Manhattan, Holiday Dance Classic

With the cost of doing pro-am comps I need to be selective which comps I do. There are many other comps I would love to try, but the budget only allows so much. This year the economy has also somewhat restricted my traveling budget, so I've done a few smaller comps more locally this year.
