Going to Cuba

Hello all,

I will be going to Cuba from February 7th to March 28th. Im arriving at Havana, booking a hotel for the next two nights and for the rest no plans but to take it as it comes, although I might try to get my diving license somewhere during the period.

Anyway, I expect that an above-average number of you have been to Cuba.

Anything you'd like to share? Good addresses of casas particulares, things i definitely have to see? Salsa venues to visit? General advice?

Thanks,

Lockstep

Are there any americans on DF that have been to Cuba? It is my understanding that although possible, it is very difficult for an american to get a visa to go to Cuba.

hard to get a visa to cuba? well i've been there , but that was like 4 years ago
and there is one thing that i noticed, there would be a club at one night, and the other night its not there...
they open whenever they want and close whenever they want, not caring for those people who want to dance!! hope its not like that any more.

Without going into the politics (or into who is right, who is wrong), have you forgotten there is a "love hate" relationship going on with the Cuban and the American government? It is not so easy for Americans/American passport holders to go to Cuba.

I've been quite lucky in that I've gone twice. Once last year (end of May-beginning of June 2004) and once earlier this year (January 2005). I enjoyed myself immensely. I made friends during the first visit, hung out with them a lot during the second visit, and have remained in contact with several of them via e-mail. The two times that I went, however, were with groups that had visas. I would love to go again, but I don't know of any way since many groups have lost their licenses.

What are your plans in Cuba, lockstep? Are you thinking to stay only in Havana? The only places I've been to are Havana, Santa Clara, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, and Varadero. Between two trips, I've stayed mainly in:

Havana -- Marianao (our "home base on both trips; about a week during both trips); Vedado (for a couple of days)
Santa Clara -- Los Caneyes (for a couple of days)
Trinidad -- Finca Ma' Dolores (for a couple of days)
Cienfuegos -- Hotel Yaguanabo & Hotel Pasacaballos (which looks as though it would be a hotel that Tony Montana would have had built; the decor and architecture is straight out of the '70s) (a day and a half at both places)
Varadero -- across the street from the beach (three days)

Have fun! Dance a lot! Engage in many conversations!
