Great tango DVD

I just finished watching a DVD of the Tango Buenos Aires 6th World Dance Competition. It shows 16 couples who were finalists in the Show Tango events, including the five who placed highest. The couple who were won first place was to my eyes the one who clearly deserved it.

They were Jose Fernandez and Melody Giselle Celatti. Here are two videos. The first is of their winning performance, the second a more improvised performance at the milonga "La Marshall." Each gives a better view in some ways than the other.

The DVD is filmed and produced by UK site.

There are far too many choreographed performances of tango. Real people dance tango on a social floor where it is improvised. That's the true test of a dancer--dancing with someone you don't know to music you love. Anybody can choreograph a tango, but that doesn't prove they know how to dance well.

I have to agree with you to some extent. After 20 years of tango I've gotten bored with much of the acrobatics of show tango performances. I skimmed and skipped much of the first 11 couples but enjoyed all the 5 place winners.

And the 1st place winners were real poets of motion, and whose routine matched the music wonderfully, and moved with an elegant economy of motion I had to admire.

As for not being able to dance socially ... Perhaps so for some of these couples. Perhaps you do not pay attention to what many tango performers do when they go dancing socially. Typically the more experienced ones dance very simply and perfectly in tune to the music and their partners. This is when they go to relax from the strenuous demands of the hours of practice they must do almost every day.
