Handbags

Fascination, how can you be a mother and not have a stuffed handbag? By much effort, I have reduced my load to:

wallet
glasses (for driving)
sunglasses (for walking)
calendar
keys
cellphone
face shield (for CPR -- knock on wood)
pack of tissues
lipstick, comb, nail file, chapstick
hand lotion, hand sanitizer
pillbox (for DH, I rarely need tylenol, aspirin, etc. but he often does!)
2 pens
mini-flashlight
mini-tape measure (for shopping)
train/bus pass
BART ticket (for days when different transit is needed)
key-card (for work)
book of tickets for car wash

I use only ONE bag - a very nice, very expensive (around $200 if I remember correctly) leather backpack DH gave me for Christmas three years ago. I picked it out, and we joked with the salesman as he gift-wrapped it about how I would be surprised to find it under the tree. OK, I admit to having a couple of evening bags, but the days of switching bags to match my outfit are LONG gone.

I like wearing things with pockets and belts. This way wallet and car keys go into pockets (wallet on one side, car keys on the other) and I have a belt clip for my cell phone. Sunglasses live in the car or get hooked to my collar if I don't need them (or go in the pocket with car keys). I used to carry a backpack when I did not work from home, but its purpose was mainly to take some work home.

face shield (huh?)

let me clarify that I in no way am passing a jugement about purse carriers...i probably should have one...I just don't...

A face shield is some plastic with a one-way valve so if you do CPR you minimize the chances of coming in contact with the victim's bodily fluids. Of course, they are getting your bodily fluids, but they don't have a say in the matter. I have no idea whether I would ever have the guts to give CPR to a stranger, but I'll have some protection if I do (and if my purse happens to be within reach at the time).

If you can get by without a purse there's no reason you "should" have one. I admire your ability to get by without the "security blanket" of having things handy whether you really need them at that moment or not! Maybe I'll learn from your example ... or maybe not.

The only thing I haven't figured out how to deal with sans purse, is...uh...ladies' supplies. In winter, it's not a problem (coat pocket). But summer? I need to get this figured out... Suggestions?

Well. This is getting very personal. But I actually don't use my bag for these items (because it's not always handy or discreet to grab it when I am heading to the ladies' room). I use the little o.b. brand. No applicator, so they are small enough to fit in the coin pocket of my jeans without making a noticeable bulge.

in my dance shoe bag...and when am I ever without that?

hopefully, will be shopping together for a nice, coin-pocket-less slimline wallet this weekend... <heh>

did go shopping for slimline... resulted in some understandable separation anxiety... a man has the same wallet for 8 years, he's not gonna let it go that easily. *grin*

but to my assertion that i had a right to the same unobstructed rear view that he does... he offered up a lovely compromise. wallet now resides either in jacket pocket or shoe bag...

:D

(his comment upon crawling into driver's seat: "boy, it sure feels good to be without that butt-bulge!" -- amen )

this begs the question, NOT TO BE ANSWERED, what kind of bulge is it if it's in the front pocket

well my dance bag and my gym bag are the same bag....not to be confused with my shoe bag...here the truth comes out...my shoe bag (for daily use) is one of those crappy drawstring cheescloth sort of things that the vendors give you...my good one is a golf shoe bag for breast cancer awareness that MQ bought me...and those have only the shoes, some mouthwash and a tampon in them...now the gym/dance bag (which never leaves my car except on comp days has the following:

teeth whitening strips
tooth brush
mints
mouthwash
toothpicks
make-up..
uh two varieties of perfume
shampoo
conditioner
several thongs...sorry it's true
thread and needles
super glue
shoe brush
several changes of sports bras and very thin Tshirts
CDs...ballroom and aerobics
a sea of other things that vary from day to day

sounds to me like your dance IS your handbag...
say, how often you use those whitening strips?
and what's the super glue for?

cept I never carry the bag...it's like a storage space in my car...I use the strips two or three times the week before a comp...and the super glue is mainly to re-glue the suede back onto my shoe b/c comp floors chew the daylightsl out of them
