Well, since they are bedrock of the tradition, I don't think that's wise. A bigger problem is that we do not have access to their reality so we cannot judge accurately.

Where do we have that? As you yourself note, there have been many idealizations and omissions in personal accounts. The problem with a lot of tango "history" is that it is based on anecdotal accounts of the past. And people are notoriously bad at remembering their past accurately, especially when they are still managing a career.
