Has Buenos Aires lost its tango soul?

I meant earlier that for a regular (non tango) holiday, I am opposed to package holidays. I would like to do it like TTanguero but it does sound like he is a much more advanced leader.
I was literally one year into tango almost to the day the first time I went. You don't need to be 'advanced,' but you need to have a comfortable close embrace and see the music as the leader.

Privates are not available to me as my teacher, although excellent, has a long waiting list...
That's just an excuse. Besides, you're supposed to practice close embraces not with your regular teacher but regularly with a female teacher from another town. You're not taking advice seriously!

I'm a bit disappointed that festivals etc aren't recommended. I thought it might be a good way to fast track my learning.

These events are primarily for enjoyment, not learning. You can go to the workshops if you want to pick up random bits of knowledge. The problem is you won't know how to resolve contradictory advice yet, and you won't easily be able to come back in a month for a follow up. But it's a decent way to meet people.

I agree with the general consensus that you should seek out a female teacher who dances primarily close embrace for lessons. Where are you based?

quickly spend a considerable amount of money on 1:1 privates with a follower (never a couple) who can deeply analyze and correct your body mechanics.
I'm curious, why not a couple? Since another man might easily be able to pinpoint faults in things like posture and walking and the embrace. I've never tried working with a couple, but I would certainly try it.

Thanks everyone, very helpful advice. It seems I will delay my holiday until next year, it will allow me to get some more time to get used to the close embrace, and to generally become a better dancer.

BTW, as it was mentioned above, what is a tango holiday, and how is it different to a festival? I am looking at doing a european weekend this year now instead, and saw these events, and was wondering if any might be suitable:

Oct 15 18, tango alma, london
30 sept oct 4 istanbul, madrugada,
Toulouse Neo Tango Marathon TNT 2026, October 23–26
Rome Tango Wellness Festival & Marathon, 8-11 oct
"AmarCORd" Bologna Tango Marathon, october 30th - nov 1
Miramare, triest, October 2–4
Imperial Tango Marathon Annecy, 2nd édition
October 23–25, annecy,
Dijon Tango d’Or festival October 2–4
Riga, Unicornio Tango Weekend, October 23–25
Vilnius: Vilnius Tango Weekend, October 16–18
Basel, Maracuentro 2026: The 28th Edition, October 1–4
Salzburg Tango Festivalito October 9–11

If anyone is familiar with any of these, it would be great to hear about them.

Tango Alma should be fine, the level isn't really high and if you already know people who are going, it'll be alright. I am a bit hesitant to suggest you try Madrugada simply because I know a few people who've been there, and it's a marathon-ish experience from what I hear, and those might be a bit too overwhelming for you, but then again, it's also a festival I think?

Riga/Vilnius are where the El Gordo marathons are held, so level might be higher than what you're used to, but they're just tango weekends, so won't be too bad? Festivals are better for what you're looking, but they're primarily for enjoyment as what the other posters have said, but they'll be eye-openers for you if you haven't travelled much for tango before.

Either find someone to go with, or who's going to an event, and if you haven't been to that city before, you'll get to explore it for the first time. A big plus if you're not having a good time at that event.

I agree on pianistamediano's rating. But its actually not what you need right now at this point in your tango career!
That's why you should book Tango Holidays in the fall instead: Only continuous deep exercise with someone of Mabel's calibre can help you out of your dead end and enable you to make the long-overdue leap to the next level.

Thanks all for the helpful (albeit somewhat chastening!) advice. It seems now that I should travel for private lessons, which will be a better use of my holiday time. I'm going to do some research for female teachers. Any recommendations (by DM if deemed more appropriate) are helpful!

..Any recommendations here are helpful!
I already did recommend Marbel. I actually haven't had privates but often danced socially with her when she was in relation with a friend of mine. For me she is one of the most proficient teachers ever! And the location on Crete is unparalleled! A must have!

Furthermore, I can recommend Diana del Valle of "Juan and Diana", or Susanne Opitz of "Susanne and Rafael". Of course there are a lot more, but the ones I mentioned are availlable on the german oranganizer TangoTours and offer privates.

..Mabel Rivero.. she is one of the best teachers in the world in my view.
Hear, hear, enrosskay! I'm not the only one to recommend her.

So, don't run away again this time. Jump into the cold water (literally), although at Souda Beach (Crete) the water is warm and the nights are hot (literally).
