Already, as a fairly undeveloped dancer, I don't enjoy dancing with a lot of followers who are even less skilled. It's a bit of a worry to think that if I were to improve, my local enjoyable pool would decrease, but I would be able to dance at some of the other milongas, which would be nice. I guess at some stage in the distant future there is a chance I would "outgrow" them too, but I can't say I know enough about the local standard to judge that.

Quality over quantity. I only dance with 6 out of over 200 female followers in my community and only with 1 male leader. This is, of course, due to my specific limitations. However, several experienced followers in my cohort feel the same way: they'd rather sit than dance incorrectly. But of course, there are also invincible bulldogs who drive bumper cars with every dancer.

Hence the recommendations to 'sample' other locations, without significant commitment until you decide, rather than a quantum leap to BsAs - or anywhere else.

It is worth examining whether one’s desire to improve is actually about dancing with better dancers—that is, about status.

Not exactly. The desire is mostly to avoid dancing with bad ones and dance with those who allow you to both move freely, express the music, and really feel something.

Don't forget, they will probably improve as well over time, and faster than you because you are learning to lead. I wouldn't give up on them just yet.
