no i think there's a difference..for Belgica you need a slavishly obedient follower, for Pugliando you need, a rock chick..

so, in my neck of the woods there are a couple of milongas that have separate rooms for Alternative Music. I seldom go in to dance but when I go in to sit & cool off or whatever, the music under the "Alternative" umbrella seems to include all non-traditional music.
My preference is for 100% trad.
A local DJ who travels a lot says she was invited to DJ at milonga in another area that had separate trad/alt rooms with the traditional room usually being the smaller of the 2. When she arrived & began to set up they said no - go to the big room. She said I only have traditional music. They said that's what they wanted.

If you are, then we're both in that minority. I love music, I love dancing AT, if I hear a song on that moves me then I want to dance to it. AT. I don't care what the music is.
To me, that's a large part of the beauty of AT--the fact that it is so versatile that it can work with just about any music, and the feel of it can be made just about anything. Seems such a shame to take that inherent flexibility and constrain it with music.

If a tune has those qualities that inspire me to dance tango, I'm happy to dance to it. Unfortunately, lots of alternative music, IMO, has other qualities, that do not inspire me in the same way. I enjoy dancing tango to a few blues tunes, but most of them inspire me to dance blues.
I too enjoy dancing tango to a wide range of music. Some DJs push the limits, though, and play music that has no real affinity with the tango vocabulary (to my taste, at least), but left to my own devices, my choices would be for over 90% traditional music (but from a very wide range of styles and periods within that very wide grouping). It is not for nothing that the music has endured: some of it for 90 years, and far from feeling constrained by such music, I am constantly find in it subtleties and nuances, in three minutes, that are just missing from much of the 'Bang, Bang, Bang' school of eight-minute-long contemporary alternatives.

I completely agree. It's beautiful music, no doubt about it.
I guess part of my liking for alternative (and I don't just mean electronic stuff like Gotan, etc....I mean, say, the Black Eyed Peas or Bob Marley or Beethoven or Lady Gaga) is that, in the same way that I listen to different music to suit different moods, I want to dance to different music to suit different moods. Perhaps if I knew ballroom dancing, I'd dance some BR dance to the different music...but I don't, I know tango, so I dance tango to it. Well, would, if given the chance. It's just fortunate that AT gives me a vocabulary and a structure that is flexible enough.
And I just like AT better.

This is pretty much how I feel. While I'm perfectly fine with a milonga with no alternative music, there are plenty of other songs that create some kind of emotional response, where I'm happy to tango to it.
It seems to me that this is a very personal thing, as to what music inspires/moves you to want to tango to it (as some people seem to like to tango to Tom Waits, while I have trouble even staying in the room when one of his songs is playing).

My intent was clear to anyone who is interested in a conversation rather than scoring points by being pedantic. I was stating my preference as asked. I do know that the different golden age orchestras have different 'styles', and I cherish that. Let me rephrase my preference to satisfy your pedantic mind: 100% styles of the golden age, 0% Nuevo/neo/alternative.

You're in my corner (even though I don't think Gotan Project is dance music --well, it is excellent dance music but not for AT-- I've had an excellent dance to a cover of a New Order song).
That pretty much guarantees you're in the vocal minority.
