Have you ever felt all danced out?

I kinda do. I've had few years straight of all dance all the time, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. But I'm fearing the thrill is gone. Have you ever felt that way? And does the feeling pass?

Just wondering. I'll be fine either way. I'm just wondering.

Yes.

Yes, but I had to get to the point where I wasn't just ready to quit, but actually did quit.

Oh yes, and like Laura, I too actually quit . . . and only did "some" social dancing. I re-started again and again . . . procrastinating each time on the DF how I was back in the saddle . . . ready to go as far as competing again.

This last Friday, I did it again . . . have a new Pro, Katie Boyle, and am signed up to compete in the Master's Division . . . starting next month!

Wonder how long I'll last this time??? At least I keep coming back for more!

This is a good topic p . . . I wonder how many more of us are out there who do or have done the same?

Yes, it does happen to me. Happens with dance and ice skating, too. With skating it's often because I feel like it's always the same--camel spin, double toe loop, axel, footwork, sit spin---bleh. Last time I watched the Worlds, all the programs looked the same to me, and that was bad.

But it was years ago, and I think I just needed some time off. It's like smelling the same perfume for awhile--you get used to it and can't really smell it anymore. Go smell something else for awhile, and you can smell the perfume again another day. That's how I think of it.

I'm dusting off my skates today. :-)

Oh...I go back and forth. I figure we all lead busy lives and when we are tired of one we can try something else whether it be a paricular dance style or a totally different activity. I don't sweat it.

I'm getting tired out this week from dancing, but only because we have a show on Saturday. I'm working with two instructors trying to master my solos, and I think that is the main problem. Otherwise, I always have fun dancing, but I know this week is a little stressful for me though with costumes and everything else that has to happen before the show. And I actually only noticed this last night when I couldn't dance at our group party the way that I usually do. I was forgetting steps and was very tense more so than usual. But I think that I'll be back to normal after I get my first show out of the way though I hope lol! ;)

A few days ago (beginning of Easter holidays) all I wanted to do was sleep and rest and really didn't want to dance. And now, after a week of vacation I find myself dancing in the kitchen and browsing ballet leaflets and wondering whether I should start some ballet in the summer (get a fresh perspective) and itching for a private with my teacher (in 2 days!).
So my real answer is, I don't know. Maybe it does pass. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe all you need is a break, maybe you can't salvage the situation. Maybe you shoudl try a differt style of dance. I suggest you start with a little break (2-3 weeks) and see how that goes.

I think everyone at one point or another experiences this. When it happens to me, I take a day or two off and completely remove myself from any sort of dancing. I distract myself by going to the beach, movies, out with friends, or whatever just to clear my mind. Then I can go back fresh. I reevaluate what I am doing and remember why I started dancing- because I enjoy it so much. I usually watch some videos of old comps or some dance movie to put myself in a good mood and then when I practice, I do so by myself and I forget about choreography/technique and just dance. Its fun to just mess around and get whatever negativity out of your system. Then, I can refocus and go back to technique, choreography, etc putting myself 100% into my dancing.

If you take a day off and miss dancing, then you aren't quite burnt out yet.

You know you're burnt out when you're sitting around during the day of your lesson secretly hoping that your partner or teacher will call and cancel.

Or when you take a short break and don't even notice that you haven't gone dancing.

Or when you feel relieved that you will be missing a competition.

Or if you find yourself saying things like "I don't really care any more, I'm only doing it because of <partner's name>."

You know you're better when you look at your calendar and think "yay, lesson on Tuesday!"

Good question. It seems to me that is part of the spectrum of burning out...you're getting crispy but you keep going because of the addiction. I think I existed in that for a while before I got to the behaviors listed above. After I while I finally pulled the plug. And we all know how long that lasted for (three weeks).

What did Askling say? That having dance fever is like having malaria? Oh dear.

I don't know that I necessarily get "burnt out", but after a looooong winter, when it starts to get really nice out, I have a harder time motivating myself to dance/practice. Especially those really nice summer days.
