Heavy Salsa?

Ok, I admit it - I'm ignorant.

So what is the meaning/def'n of "Heavy Salsa"?

I've heard the term used by quite a few DJ's, and it's in the title of several of the albums that I own.

Salsa dura. I believe. Generally the NY Fania All Star type with full orchstra.

salsachinita is pretty much on point. It is the heavy percussion, hard-driving, at your face, go get it, NY Style of salsa. (Style of the 70s that is) Today's example would be Spanish Harlem Orquestra. They play salsa dura/heavy...

Eddie Palmieri's Vamonos Pa'l monte is a popular example of heavy salsa. Even el Gran Combo's Timbalero is a heavy salsa. Just about any hard driving salsa is said to be Heavy.

I love listening to heavy salsa, but I rather dance to the less heavy stuff, which some considered "heavy" because of the feelings the music brings out.

As to whether I like it or not - it depends on the particular song. There are some songs that I definitely like and a couple that I didn't quite care for.

I used to love salsa dura, with lots of percussion & brass.

There is a local band that still play some cool classics but nothing like they used to be 10 years ago :roll: .

In the last couple of years or so I had developed a taste for Cuban flava. It's totally changed my dancing style/preference as well.

I love lots of extra percussion! And low brass -- they never get enough spotlight. But I can't have high brass taking over my woodwind section! (Go clarinets! )

But, does/can a certain style of music *really* change the way one dances? Has it changed your style entirely, Salsachinita, or only your style for that particular kind of Salsa? Do you have a different style for every different music style when it comes to Salsa?

Yeap, songs all bring out different emotions in us. The sign of a good dancer is he who can change styles from song to song. There is a saying that goes "consistency, the strength of a weak mind". Well, that is the weakness of a dancer.

To interpret change in mood, able dancers change their style of dancing as well. Not only throughout the song but from section to section as well. Our bodies can slouch, straighten, our motions brisker, smoother, etc. An able dancer should pretty much be able to tell a deaf man, by using his body, what type of song he is dancing.

This is where the good old word (sabor/flava) comes in. Remember, dancing is like you watching a movie, or simply telling an anecdote. Your body naturally reacts to changes in emotion, those emotions are what differentiate the mood of any given event, and let the observer know your feelings and how the correlate to the event…

By looking at a person from day to day, we should be able to pick up their current mood. No words are needed, only the natural reaction of the body to everyday mood changes. Same with dancing…

Something tells me that I'd *love* hearing you speak, Boriken! You've got a talent for using words.

It makes sense; everything you've said. I'd like to hope that I do this, at the very least, subconciously, when I dance... I need more time on the dance floor to create any flava of my own though! Ahh, someday I'll have it!! Until then, I'll just keep trying to improve as much as I can!

hehe...

I danced with pacion, she dances on1 and I on2. The first dance we were feeling each other out (on2). It was too funny because after we were done dancing the first she asked me to dance a second on1. :shock:

She is a 1000X better dancing on2 than I am dancing on1. I felt like a fish out of water, I'd get on it for 2 bars and right back on2. All I could do was laugh, and everytime I got on1 I would smile like a cheese ball and say yes, I got it, I got. I actually think I'm ready to teach on1, I got so good, NOT :roll:

But I must say that our last dance (and last of the night), the music finally slowed down (Jimmy's) Ahhhh, what is he thinking with the heavy stuff!!! 40 songs straight! anyways, I was able to come back down to my preferred style and really feel like we were passed the jumps of on1 and on2. I enjoyed every second of all the dances, even my attempt at on1. , I have to learn on1.

Did I mention that I was actually nervous to dance with a DFer??? I think I even forgot to mention it to Pacion. Hmmm, I thought I was over the nervousness about 2 years ago. :shock: I trip over my own feet when I'm nervous.

Hmm, no you didn't! But it can't be *that* bad, can it? We don't bite... Hard. :twisted: Well, maybe we should just bring up funny posts to break the nervousness, eh?
