Help me find a dance studio in China

Hello all!

I'm an Australian dancer (only level 1, primarily Latin but actually prefer Standard) and I'm going to be moving to China (specifically Wuhan) for about six months.

I don't want to deteriorate too much in the time I'm gone, so I'm looking for a dance studio or dance teacher in Wuhan. English is pretty important, obviously...

Does anybody have any idea where I could go about finding one? I've checked on expat forums, Google and I'm at a loss.

Thanks in advance.

You can check out the dancesport school in Wuhan. They're for pre-professionals (age 12-19) but you might be able to see if the teachers or students there can give private lessons. My ex-partner has moved out of Wuhan, otherwise, I'd recommend him :)

You can check out the link (need someone who can read Chinese though) at: http://www.cdsf.org.cn

This is their IDSF arm in China. All the dancesport schools are listed there.

I think I was reading somewhere the other day on an Australian board that the Perry's teach in China - they move between Brisbane and there. Maybe you could give them a ring.
Just found their webpage - looks like they are based in Hong Kong. They may know somebody who can help though. http://www.dancesport.uk.com/pros/perry.htm - mummsie :-)

Shanghai is not Wuhan, I know.. but a friend found this place that he plans on checking out some time: http :// www. clubtbd.com/ . It's called the Blackpool Dream Club. So if you pass through Shanghai while in China, perhaps this is a place you could try.

Thanks for all the replies and the welcome!

I'll be stopping over in Shanghai for a bit first, so I might try out The Blackpool Dream ... at the very least, they'll be able to help me out.

I've been told that Dancesport is pretty big over there - hopefully it shouldn't be too hard finding a competent instructor that speaks English.

I come from Australia and have been living in Shanghai now for 4 months. I have found a partner through my work colleagues but am struggling to find a teacher for ballroom/latin.

We have attended the public social dancing at the Paramount which is on the corner of Huashan Road and Yuyuan Road. They have an afternoon "tea" session which is 80 RMB per couple and runs from 1pm to 4.30pm which we have attended a few times. We are the only western people there and don't have the skills to ask anyone where they might learn ballroom dancing.

Determined to not just attend a social, but also learn something, we did some google searching to find a ballroom class or private instructor. We walked around the city for hours today visiting all the recommended places only to discover that the following are closed:
-Blackpool dream at 518 Sichuan Road North
-Oriental Garden dance school at 9 Zhenning Road
- Jing'an Cultural Palace 459 Wulumuqi Road
and
- Latin Grooves at 1250 Yuyuan Road (Changning District Worker's Palace)

However, where Latin Grooves used to be there is a ballroom on the 3rd floor which seems to offer ballroom private lessons (however everything was in Chinese so I will need some translation assistance) and on the 4th floor, there is a new dance school which offers jazz, salsa and latin and a very friendly bi-lingual woman called Bai Di who is the deputy director of the building will be able to help organising private lessons for any of these three styles. They need a minimum of 15 for regular classes, but haven't got the numbers yet. Di's number is 86-21-61253125 x 868

Will post again when we have a better idea of classes and prices to assist anyone else who moves to Shanghai and wants to learn ballroom.
