Hey. New to the forum.

tanya

The reason I suggested q/step ?, -- that,s because in the intern. div. ( he posted that dance as a choice ) it has invariably been taught in all beginners classes with waltz being a close second.( Just starting a new class with its inclusion )

Also, if he is in the u.k., it is very dominant in public dances. As far as difficulty, a matter of opinion. Have been teaching beginners q/s for " ever ", and have seldom run in to problems of any magnitude . It also ties in with social f.t. that is taught in the u.k. ( no locks ) .and , you should remember, that in the u.k. q / step is as common to the general public, as is swing states side .; a carry over from the forties which got passed down generationally .

Foxtrot as a first dance to beginners in a class setting ? and in the u.k. ?-- NEVER happen ( Thats why novice 2 dances are q.s. and w ). If private, even then I would suggest w or q /s .to get started .

Foxtrot is considered the most difficult of all dances to master , and can quickly destroy confidence in ones ability .

Last q for the poster.. Lady or Gent ?.--- that brings a whole new set of problems to the equation .

You also ( which i missed ) say calif.

Curious as to why you were offers q / s as a choice /-- Intern. type studio ?. But still will stick with gentle immersion into the choices . Classes are always ( if taught by a fully qual. instr. ) a way to get involved , without too strong a commitment financially .
2 reasons, cost, and exploration . Once introduced to the vagaries of the different styles ( amer / intern ) your choices can then be evaluated, with the info. you will have gained from attending classes , thus enabling you to make a choice of the direction you wish take .
Lastly, as lady , in Intern. style, partners may be more difficult to come by, not that choosing the other styles is easier .

The place I'm looking at is called Vivo Dancesport Center
their website is vivodance.com

I'm not sure why they would offer quickstep, but i guess they do. There's also lots of 'all levels' classes now that i look at it. It seems pretty lenient. But anyway, I think i'll take your advice on that. I should try to familiarize myself with some of the basics(?) and then see how i go from there.

And also, I found a friend (also a lady) to come take lessons with me! She's super excited too. Can't wait.

Hmmm... don't know about that. I knew of two guys at my studio that both do International and they want (or wanted) partners. It may just depend on the studio and the instructor and if they compete etc. But yeah for the most part it's hard, because International isn't easy, so I can see what you are saying. And I think that you either like it or you don't. But I only dance with my instructor right now, so that's not anything that I have to worry about for the time being. ;)

Vivo is strong for international standard and their teachers have good (European) credentials. If you're in their area, you're fortunate. If you have a travel to get to Hacienda Heights, there are also other good studios in SoCal.

Let me add my voice to reb's comments. If Vivo is convenient for you then you're already set, and if not there are several other strong options in SoCal.
