Holding your breath

After all this time, I find that I still hold my breath when I try to practice steps in both latins and standards about half the time unless I actively think about it.

Has anyone else had this problem?

In dance, no i haven't had the same problem.

In yoga or pilates, yes, i have that problem sometimes. Engaging your muscles and keep on breathing is tricky at the beginning.

Why do you hold your breath ? What are you trying to achieve ?

I did. I became less tense over time and it went away. Realization why I get dizzy by the time chacha is over helped too ;)

I haven't had this problem too much while dancing. But I used to have an aerobics tape where they encouraged you to sing along with the music to make sure you were breathing enough and breathing properly. Maybe you could try singing along with the song you're dancing too? Or humming if there are no words?

Once I was practicing quickstep, and suddenly my partner started complaining I was feeling very heavy...and I realized I hadn't really breathed for the entire song! Since then I've been trying to breathe consciously. I've heard it helps to breath in and out in certain parts of steps, like breath in as you go into a spin turn and out as you lower into the next step.

i hold my breath constantly. so i've been working on, a, not doing that, and b, trying to 'use it' to relax before difficult moves. i tend to keep my anxiety high in my chest and back, and a forceful exhale before i launch into a tricky spin or whatever helps keep me grounded.

Now I've noticed a couple of days ago that DH (who just started taking Standard, complete beginner) holds his breath too! Is it just because when you don't have moves in your muscle memory, you think too much?
In my routines, I've noticed that (not on purpose) I figured out a "breathing schedule" for myself that go with the moves. So I breath to the music... too funny

it's a very advanced (but completely natural) and very useful technique to use your breath in the way you describe... congratulations.

Try to coordinate breathing into a part of figures. For example, our coach taught us to breathe in (as if trying to smell) each other when we are closed and breathe out when we are apart during Rumba. It changes your look.

I sometimes hold my breath and there are even times, especially
when I'm learning something new, when I close my eyes lol

I think yoga and pilates are a big help in breathing. In fact, since doing Y&P, when I use the weight machines, I now breath much easier because I'm exhaling on the "work" part and inhaling on the "rest" part. I focused a lot on my breathing in my last comp and definitely noticed that I wasn't winded as much as I had been before...and I did a LOT of heats.
